1222583 2011-08-12 00:04:00 Like they say, England today, New Zealand in 10 to 20 years time....

Good-oh, I wont be around then.

However, NZ hasn't had the vast influx of Jamaicans that Britain had, so that may make a difference.

1222586 2011-08-12 07:57:00 I reckon the Maori in NZ (south Auckland probably) would be more than capable of a similar thing if provoked.Ouch - that is rather unfair. Looking at the photos of the riots, there is a good mix of nationalities and genders - I even saw one guy in a suit. Why pick on Maoris?

The London riots were more associated with a poorer socio-economic population, not a specific race.

1222587 2011-08-12 08:33:00 If they do have riots here I hope our police dont pussyfoot around. Forget plastic bullets and water cannon use zero zero 12 gauge shot or 45 cal or 9mm soft nose bullets and drop these rioters in their tracks.
Its within international law to shoot looters, take a leaf out israelis police book on how they treat Palestinian protesters.

1222588 2011-08-12 08:38:00 We had rioting in Aucklands Queen St a decade or so ago. From my feeble memory of the news at that time, there were plenty of honkies wrecking stuff.

There's some interesting psychology to how mob mentality over-rides an individuals values and morals. However, I'd still be happy for the culprits to be put in stocks and left for the wider public to voice their opinion to these scumbags. Problem is there are people in the wider public would kill them, literally, so you'd still have to provide some degree of defense to the scoundrels.

I don't think so prefect, that's a matter for the sovereign state. But correct me if I'm wrong (that means I'm not entirely sure of myself).

1222590 2011-08-12 08:45:00 The police have arrested so far 1500 and there is still more too make. Alot of the looting was caught on video surveillance cameras. They also showed you on the news last night that one of the looters/rioters was a 29 year old teacher.

People do/say things that as an individual they probably wouldn't. The incidences I am thinking off occurred a couple of years ago. Jen (38)

Agreed, Paul. The mob mentality can readily influence the usually placid, conservative, law abiding citizens in all of us.

Mob rule in this case has empowered the feeble minded, given them courage they would not otherwise have. Jen is partly right: "the London riots were more associated with a poorer socio-economic population, not a specific race." For lower socio-economic demographics, read feeble minded. Unfortunately the race aspect creeps in, mainly because non-Aryan groups tend to fall into the lower socio-economic group.

The power of mob rule should not be underestimated. Less than 100 years ago, it was acceptable for cannibalism by Maori. But let's not be racist, we're talking human behavior. Let's not forget that the parents of the baby boomers generation were (not individually) responsible for mass genocide, killings, all in the name of the state. And were lauded and held up in esteem.

Sorry folks, that means still living grandparents, all over the world, in many countries.

The problem with the London riots runs a lot deeper than appears on the surface.
