All the same, its a laugh, get over it - move along.

For most of the viewing audience it is a laugh, an entertaining program.
But Top Gear can go too far, with serious consequences:

It's currently being sued by electric car maker Tesla after claiming, among other allegations, that the Roadster's true range is only 55 miles per charge (rather than 211), and that it unexpectedly ran out of charge. Tesla says "the breakdowns were staged and the statements are untrue"

211 miles = 340 km. With that range - if I had the $$ - I would get a Tesla!

I remember the Hybrids were not as economical as the officials said also

1221513 2011-08-08 02:19:00 I stopped watching it because while mostly it's very entertaining, they do do this kind of stuff.

It is a car show, so waht if they like loud, fast, petrol eating performance cars?

Not a reason to blatantly lie about them. Why don't they just stick to the facts and their usual comments about how it's not for them type thing.

+ 1

Except it's a blokes show, so all is forgiven and they haven't lost this fan :D

1221514 2011-08-08 03:06:00 TESLA 2.5 Roadster Specs:

Single speed transmission

245 miles per charge

0-60 in 3.7 seconds

200km/hr top speed (electronically limited!!)

295 lbs-ft of instant torque

zero emissions

Apart from the price, it is a very usable vehicle.

Cheers

1221515 2011-08-08 03:19:00 With the above specs, just plugging it in at home at night would suffice. It would be very good town transport. Hire a bigger car to take the family away for the weekend. mzee (3324)
1221516 2011-08-08 03:23:00 I can only do top gear in short bursts of 3 or 4 programmes before i need a break. Don't get me wrong but i really enjoy it just not every week - maybe i'm not petrol headed enough ?? (still its a million times better than the ozzie version, thats just awful) globe (11482)
1221517 2011-08-08 03:28:00 The time to charge is the practicality issue for me - 4 hours to recharge makes it unusable as a distance vehicle until range dramatically increases. I'm sure the impending commercial charging stations will be much quicker. The 10 minutes it takes to fill up with petrol would get you enough charge for ~15km.

Don't get me wrong it's a cool concept, but I don't believe it's quite at broad-appeal stage yet.

1221518 2011-08-08 03:58:00 In the most recent electric issue (the Nissan one) I didn't interpret any part of it to be "It doesn't get the range they say", simply "You're screwed if it goes flat anywhere but a main centre with a charging station". Petrol stations are common enough, and the range of most petrol-powered vehicles long enough, that it's not a big issue. But if you were to drive a Nissan LEAF in New Zealand, you'd be screwed, as I don't believe there are more than 4 or 5 stations in the whole country. I realise it's a slightly better situation in many parts of Europe, but it's still nowhere near as widespread as petrol, and I interpreted the episode as a commentary on how impractical an electric vehicle is at this point for most people because the necessary infrastructure is not in place to make it practical to drive around and "recharge" as needed the way you can a petrol vehicle.

Yeap, they never lied about it's range from what I recall and he knew it was going to run out soon. They did add in some dramatic effect, but the message they were portraying was correct. You run out of power after X amount of distance, you need to wait a damn long time to do a recharge.

Lol, I couldn't even make it through an episode of the American one it was so bad.

Err, the 1st issue is a dispute, doesnt mean TG are wrong, as for the Nissan Leaf, I reckon the bloggers probably drive a toyota hybrid and is a green tweeb who believes in man made GC

1221520 2011-08-08 04:10:00 There is a new lithium ion battery technology in the wings that will charge at very fast speeds, fast enough for most people to treat it like a petrol stop. Apparently it is operational in the laboratory, but has yet to be developed to commercial standard.

No doubt it would cost about, oh, a $mega-million? give or take $500,000, for a torch battery at present, and it would be the size of a small house with a cooling plant to match, and use chemicals that could reverse creation and dissolve a planet in less than seven days (without resting) but we will see it in commercial production this side of the next millenium.

Cheers
