1222356 2011-08-10 11:51:00 Dateline NZTV1. The show: Masterchef Australia. In the show, it was claimed that the humble banana is in fact a berry, and is the fruit of a herb. (It is)

Duly impressed, I filed that trivia away for future reference.

Dateline Prime. Only a few hours later, Stephen Fry's "Oi" made reference to exactly that. Two references on two different channels within hours of each other with the same obscure trivia.

What can this mean?

I knew it was a herb, but berry?

On Fair Go they said anything with seeds is a fruit (so tomatoes are a fruit) so this means cucumbers, marrows and pumpkins are all fruits?

Which would make bananas a vegetable then?

1222360 2011-08-10 20:05:00 Not many people on Fair Go wanted a fruit salad with tomatoes in it. I would imagine having marrows or pumpkins in a fruit salad would be even more undesirable.:D Bobh (5192)

1222364 2011-08-10 22:10:00 I always thought that the banana was from the lilly family - hence it is a flower.

More useless trivia - which country produces the most bananas, but never sells them overseas?

Yes I suppose wild ones do. Cultivated ones are sterile.
