1467981 2020-04-22 01:06:00 The Case Against China is another very interesting hypothesis for the origin of this virus:

Totally agree, if China doesn't pay-up then they will have won both ways. Saved $US15 trillion and reap the benefit of increased global trade.

A shame the Yanks put $US3.7 billion into wuhan biological experiments, run by the CCP.

1467983 2020-04-22 07:06:00 Based on the stats reported here: gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com

the virus currently has a death rate of about 1 in 14, or about 7% of those infected.
This is still +/- a bit, as there's potentially many mild infections going unreported, and also many deaths reported not being counted or attributed to it.

Given it is acknowledged to be considerably good at spreading, and most of the world lack significant borders, mass communications, education and world class health systems, and it is still very much in the spreading phase... well it could potentially kill more than half a billion people over the next few years, over successive waves.

Many more will die due to health services not being able to attend to their otherwise run of the mill health issues, which would have been easily managed during 'traditional' times.

If NZ could eliminate it (and maintain strict border quarantine), then NZ would have quite a profound advantage over the rest of the world, not just in health, but also in ongoing trade, personal freedoms and lifestyle.

1467986 2020-04-24 00:12:00 The problem with Pommies is they might understand fiscal stuff but still want to take from the hard grafters and give to the unemployed or unemployable.

That's not a very kind way to speak of the Royal Family.

Yes. But it's not climate change....it's too many humans and the affect we have on the entire ecosystem:

The world has lost more than a quarter of its land-dwelling insects in the past 30 years, according to researchers whose big picture study of global bug decline paints a disturbing but more nuanced problem than earlier research.

From bees and other pollinators crucial to the world's food supply to butterflies, the bugs are disappearing.

"The decline across insect orders on land is jaw-dropping," said Michigan State University expert Nick Haddad. "Ongoing decline on land at this rate will be catastrophic for ecological systems and for humans. Insects are pollinators, natural enemies of pests, decomposers and besides that, are critical to functioning of all Earth's ecosystems."

Van Klink didn't find a link to climate change in the insect loss but did see an overarching theme of creeping urbanisation, which absorbs land where insects live and eat, and general loss of habitat from farming that takes away weeds and flowers bugs need.
