This is still +/- a bit, as there's potentially many mild infections going unreported, and also many deaths reported not being counted or attributed to it. Given it is acknowledged to be considerably good at spreading, and most of the world lack significant borders, mass communications, education and world class health systems, and it is still very much in the spreading phase... well it could potentially kill more than half a billion people over the next few years, over successive waves. Many more will die due to health services not being able to attend to their otherwise run of the mill health issues, which would have been easily managed during 'traditional' times. If NZ could eliminate it (and maintain strict border quarantine), then NZ would have quite a profound advantage over the rest of the world, not just in health, but also in ongoing trade, personal freedoms and lifestyle.
