1249173 2011-12-17 19:16:00 Hi guys, it seems all of the usb flash drives I buy seem to fall apart after a realtively short time, the cases fall off or the usb interface comes loose etc.

So I am after advice on what make/models of drives you guys use and if you have found them to last.

cheers

1249174 2011-12-17 19:28:00 Sounds like someone is too rough with them. I use a corsair blade 8 GB usb flash drive. And its still in one place. I've been using it for the last 1-2 yrs Speedy Gonzales (78)
1249175 2011-12-17 19:30:00 I personally use two different brands.

one being the Transend - Transend USB (www.ascent.co.nz) and the Imation Nano (www.ascent.co.nz) 4GB drives.

The Imations have a swivel cover that swings out of the way. I have 2 Imations that I use daily, and have done for a couple of years, and they have never had any problems or failures. The transend's have a removable cover that you can easily misplace ( guilty). :D

I do have 4 other drives, but cant remember their brands. I'll see if I can see any name on them, the names are worn off- but I have had those for about 3 years and they go through hell and back and never fail.

One thing a lot of people do is treat flash drives badly, throw them about or drop them. As for breaking the usb interface -- thats usually caused by rough treatment.

1249176 2011-12-17 20:00:00 I still have a flash drive I bought in 2004 :D

Okay, so its been taken out of the case and the circuitry placed in a LEGO brick, but it still works :p

My main flash drive is a 16GB Transcend drive which I bought because it was USB 3.0 :p

1249177 2011-12-17 20:15:00 Add to my previous post, the ones that have seen the test of time, one has even been through the washing machine are the ADATA Classic Series C801 (www.adata-group.com) wainuitech (129)
1249178 2011-12-17 22:45:00 Adata from the warehouse stationary. Solid and the connector slides back in. Blue or Red cover - about $20.00 for 8gb Peter H (220)
1249179 2011-12-18 03:46:00 My experiences with ADATA C801...

Still in use though, works well
Just need to be careful about using flash drives for long term storage I guess

1249180 2011-12-18 04:13:00 Currently I'm using a Kingston DT ultimate G2 and I'm really impressed with it, I guess I haven't had it long enough to know how it will last but it seems solidly built.

In the past I always bought whatever was cheapest for the size I wanted and apart from being a bit slow I've not had much trouble, I have a no name 256Mb drive I couldn't even begin to remember the age of that works fine.
You can buy rugged drives designed to take rough treatment if you find they break a lot.

1249181 2011-12-18 04:41:00 Two main brands I use are imation and Lexar. I use a pen drive daily and find that they will typically last about 3 years before one day they just die. Remember that they are not all equal in terms of data transfer rates - if you have big files to copy it is worth getting a more expensive faster one. johnd (85)
1249182 2011-12-18 06:43:00 The should be white. So you can write on them BBCmicro (15761)
