1222831 2011-08-12 16:48:00 100 US dollars = 96.8242 Australian dollars

100 US dollars = 120.8170 New Zealand dollars

100 Australian dollars = 124.9730 New Zealand dollars

Sumpthin' seems screwy here.

1222832 2011-08-12 20:54:00 What do you find screwy? Thats all about right, bearing in mind the US dollar and hence all other currency equivalents are in a state of yo-yo at the moment. Terry Porritt (14)

1222834 2011-08-12 23:07:00 Aussie has minerals (including uranium) that the world wants, whereas we have tourism and dairy products (woohoo!) and vegemite - for which there is much competition elsewhere in the world (well, maybe not for vegemite...).

Therefore the Aussie dollar is stronger than ours.

NZD against USD got much closer in the last few weeks than it has been in the past. Then the US senate allowed the US level of overdraft to increase, thereby bringing back to the fold those 'investors' who were previously looking for a 'safe' currency (NZD) to buy.

At that point the demand for NZD went down, so it got cheaper to buy (against the USD).

1222836 2011-08-12 23:33:00 Mathematically screwy? That seems about right.

NZ$120.82 / .9682 = NZ$124.79 which is pretty close to NZ$124.97

1222838 2011-08-13 19:34:00 In my view Australia is heading for trouble.

Its hourly wages are now the highest in the world.

And it is trading with low wage countries.

Shop assistants get $18 an hour.
In the USA the minimum wage is $8.00!

Ford and Toyota are closing car plants due to high wages.
A steel plant is closing due to

A steel plant is closing due to the high dollar and high wage rates.
Retailers are screaming because people are buying on line instead of in shops.
Well if the shops have to pay high wages and high rates, they cant compete.
