1250249 2011-12-22 03:17:00 So got new PC delivered for Xmas and donating old one to kids. Prior to backing up emails etc I merrily started pulling out the slave drives from the old machine and installed in new. All fine ( or so I thought). Restarted the old machine and also inserted a wireless card as its no longer near the router. Installed software for wireless card which appeared to be VERY slow in install and then machine restarted with the primary hard drive error message. Remade connections and no difference. Tried to install the broken drive as a slave in new machine and it installed as an ATA device and didn't get recognized as a drive. Have since bought a new drive to replace and all is well. Is there any way I can get information off the broken HDD ? Also, any clues as to what I managed to do in crappinthe drive out? And yes. I have learnt the error of my ways re backing up

Thanks again

1250250 2011-12-22 04:44:00 Connect the drive to a working PC as a slave, install something like recuva (www.piriform.com), tell it to scan the drive, it may find the files you want.

Personally I use GetData Back (http://www.runtime.org/), the program is not free though, it will allow you to scan and see any data, but not recover it till you pay.

Another way that sometimes works, is booting from a Ubuntu ( linux) live CD, that may see the data, then you copy/paste to a usb drive.

1250251 2011-12-22 05:22:00 Hi wainuitech

Tried to connect it as a slave but after installing ata drivers Windows 7 didn't see it as a HDD. In fact it didn't see anything? Just didn't appear under my computer

1250252 2011-12-22 05:25:00 You msy have to take ownership of it (www.howtogeek.com). Since its from another system, Downlad then double click on the reg file here Speedy Gonzales (78)

I've had that a couple of times. If you are lucky Getdataback will still see the drive even if windows cant.

or as mentioned before Try Ubuntu Live CD, that often can see drives that Windows cant - just depends on whats actually happened to the drive.
