1249896 2011-12-21 10:53:00 my cp crashed, not sure why. I had done some updates and was fun surfin. might have kliked somethin i shouldn't have. When I went to bed, ran a scan with essentials when i tried to get back on screen was black with cursor blinking upper left. pressed f10 and got to system restore scans said i was ok but error message said lsass.exe unable to locate component DNSAl.dll ,message was caped like that not sure if after "A" was an i or l . but any way ,big problem is i never made recovery discs but cp has separated D drive. I did a destructive restore , only thing it would let me do "I thought " but after getting back to windows I could not access my C drive. Called a support # thought i was talkin to microsoft on phone but it was iyogi any way he had me do another destructive restore. now I can use my cp and access C but cp keeps acting up, going slow, web pages freeze up stop responding, I also tried to make recovery disc now "to late maybe" but my cd/dvd burner will not read dvd discs and stops in the middle of tryin to burn the cds. there is an update for the driver at micro soft for my "HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GSA-H21L" burner but when i try to down load the driver the wizard does not see my thumb drive, it says i need, keeps telling me to insert it. The dvd/cd E drive does play music cds and reads data discs, so i think its a software problem not hardware. The unable to locate error is still there if i press F10 at start up. I have norton 360 on cp now. MY BIG QUESTION IS CAN THIS BE FIXED CHEAPLY OR SHOULD I LIVE WITH IT till i can get a new 1. microsoft is stopping support in 2014 for XP service pac 3 . mine was 2 but has been updated to 3. It took almost 3 days to reinstall all the updates from microsoft. I only ave 1G of ram and 4G of rom with a nvidia Geforce 6150 LE (had to reinstall driver back 1 because newest 1 kept crashing my game ,,half-life 2 +death match. The processor is AMD 64 3800+,MMX,3DNow,~2.4 GHz thanks 4 any help 0leumas0 (16666)
1249897 2011-12-21 14:24:00 i guess i should add that i looked in win 32 file and dnsapi.dll is there but not sure if or how i should replace it. if there,s something wrong with it or the isass.exe file is bad. 0leumas0 (16666)
1249898 2011-12-21 16:25:00 to add to this problem here is more info if i run regsvr32 dnsapi.dll error says: dnsapi.dll was loaded but the DllRegiserServer entry point was not found this file can not be registered when i run sfc /scannow error says to run windows XP Professional service pack 3 CD now From my computer,, view system properties,, general tab,, it says media center not professional ???? did i update to professional from 1 of microsofts updates without knowing or is this a virus 0leumas0 (16666)
1249899 2011-12-22 04:32:00 If cd's/dvd's cant be read in XP, some cd writing programs can cause this. Run this (support.microsoft.com). I think you need powershell for XP to run this. That DNSAPI.dll file maybe corrupt. Open a command prompt put the XP cd in and type sfc /scannow see if it finds any probs. Whats the mobo?? Speedy Gonzales (78)
1249900 2011-12-22 08:01:00 :thanks for the input Speedy :help: I've already done the Microsoft fix it When i use a data or music cd, it says, its fixed, and those 2 do work, but if i put in a movie dvd says it cant be read, When I run the sfc /scannow it tells me to put in the xp discs.((((((((((( So now my big problem is I never made the xp restore discs ))))))))))))) wondering where i can get them cheap? I've read that they have to be the same system match-- HP Paviloin a1410n XP media center sp2 2005 ,but my system now is XP professional 5.1.2600 sp3 Build 2600, because of all the up dates, I think, because i never installed XP professional :badpc: 0leumas0 (16666)
1249901 2011-12-22 08:42:00 Something maybe corrupt. Have a look here (www.askdavetaylor.com ml).

If your computer keeps booting after your get the lsass.exe error, your security registry hive is corrupt.

rename "c:\windows\sytem32\config\security" to security.bak

then copy c:\windows\system32\repair\security to the location above.

that should do it."

Worked perfectly. You can use your XP disk to boot into recovery mode (recovery mode is just a DOS prompt, there's no reinstallation), or if you don't have an XP CD (and you can't borrow one), you may need to look at a third party tool.

Great advice though, thanks Jon. the actuall directory of "c:\windows\system32\repair\security" is as follows "c:\windows\repair\security"

Ah yeah, and it's "C:\Windows\System32\Config\Security" not "C:\Windows\Sytem32\Config\Security" as well.

Just before someone finds it doesn't exist.

Is this an HP system??

1249902 2011-12-22 17:21:00 i just called who i thought was micro soft support again it was omni support wanted $299.00 to fix with 1 year subscription he was inside my cp and said my registry is messed up, said i had a polymorphic virus would take 30 to 40 min to fix 1 time fix $99.00 :badpc::mad: do those registry repair software work??? without a recovery disc?? 0leumas0 (16666)
1249903 2011-12-22 17:51:00 Have a look here (forums.techguy.org) - posts 9 - 13 should be highly helpful

Windows has copies of needed files in C:\ that are uncorrupted; but you may need to find an operating system disc and copy from that

Probably easiest if you slave your harddrive to another computer and run a virus check in safe mode FIRST. Then attempt the file copy while still in safe mode - remembering that if it is slaved; it will no longer be C:\ drive

1249904 2011-12-22 22:23:00 :thanks:thanks But I think they can lock this one up. I finally got through to microsoft. (duhh :waughh: 1 800 microsoft) The first remote tech (complimentary check) said he thought i had had a rootkit infection. It's gone but damage is done. He sent me to their vintage support. The 2nd tech said it was unfixable without the discs and since i don't have them, their going to send me new winXP professional and install it for me, after i get them. They only charged me $59.00 including the discs with free shipping. :clap that's cheaper then the the discs alone from some of the sites I've looked at. Wish I could have fixed it for free but I've learned allot just researching this problem. Now I need to learn how to save all the programs i have on this cp b4 they put new operating system on here. Got 5 or 6 days. I may start a new thread but gunna do the tutorial that's in my help program first. Thanks again 0leumas0 (16666)
