1249755 2011-12-20 01:07:00 I am having a bit of trouble and am hoping someone out there can help. I woke up this morning and my usb mouse would not respond. I have tried several different mice, in all of my usb ports with no luck. I tried disabling the usb ports and restarting the computer, but still no luck. I thought it might be a virus and so decided to try hooking up my portable HD to at least try and backup my pictures and music. I get power to the hard drive(it lights up), but the computer doesn't recognize it. I have also tried system restore but again no luck. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. Also, be aware that i am trying to do everything with the keyboard(as the mouse doesn't respond). Thanks for your help. JWood (16663)
1249756 2011-12-20 01:36:00 front USB port or rear USB port. (or laptop) ????
The front ports often fail (try the rear USB's)

1249757 2011-12-20 02:07:00 It was originally hooked into the rear USB, but I have tried both the front USB's and also all 4 in the rear. It is a little odd but, i have tried wireless as well as wired mice as well as buying a brand new one JWood (16663)
1249758 2011-12-20 02:43:00 Look in device manager, and see if the USB entries have x's besides them. if they do, delete them, then reboot. Also if youre using hubs, dont, they dont work with everything. Do you use flash drives?? If you do, these can get infected Speedy Gonzales (78)
1249759 2011-12-20 03:53:00 Is the keyboard USB or PS2? If USB, did you plug mouse into it's port?

Have you also tried a PS2 mouse?

1249760 2011-12-20 04:14:00 I had one last year that would not recognise any usb devices, googling came up with a method - shutdown PC, remove power plug from the wall, wait 30+ mins and replug, etc. I was sceptical, but it did work in this case. Renegade (16270)
1249761 2011-12-20 06:07:00 Unlikely a virus, more like something has just broken or has gone funny...

I once had a soundcard completely stop outputting sound, turned it off and unplugged overnight, next day it was fine, never had the problem again. Weird things like that just happen sometimes.

1249762 2011-12-21 17:48:00 Hey guys
when ever you plug in the USB device in any computer which is already infected by the virus so the virus contains also in the USB also and the best way to prevent is that you must to scan before the Plugin.

1249763 2011-12-21 19:07:00 .... how can you scan without plugging it in?! ;-) Chilling_Silence (9)
1249764 2011-12-21 19:13:00 Think he is talking of scanning the pc to avoid passing a nasty to the USB rather than the other way round :) CliveM (6007)
