1224423 2011-08-19 08:36:00 A recent university study has deduced that an hour of sedentary TV watching takes 22 minutes off your life.

I am astounded.

Going to the gym and flailing about for an hour at great expense actually uses up an hour of your life. I'm proposing to watch three TVs at once, and with a few hours a day of this I could be immortal. I'm not too sure how much medication I would need, because without chemical aid, 2 hours is more TV per annum than I can stomach.
Obviously too much TV is going to be bad, it would definitely pay to ease up before any of that teething nonsense is involved.

Yes, so how is it that now when more people have sedentary jobs the lifespan has increased?

And what about people in wheelchairs? They're all doomed now?

1224426 2011-08-19 23:40:00 Watching TV helps pass the time. Surveys mean nothing to me. Bobh (5192)

Agreed. Riding in the train/bus to work would be just as bad..

Actually no.

I read an interesting article on this sort of thing a while ago. It's awfully common to come up with the theory then do the research with a bias to proving your theory. And it's amazingly easy to do.

And worse, it's done all the time.

1224430 2011-08-20 02:45:00 Actually no.
It's dodgy science because it is more to do with the lack of exercise. So it doesn't matter if you are watching TV, having that extra hour in bed or what ever and how they came up with 22minutes per hour I don't know. I'm surprised it wasn't 22.5 minutes.
Reminds me of the one a while back where some one reckoned that Kiwis had bad oral hygiene because they didn't brush there tongues as if Kiwis would be any worse than anyone else.

1224431 2011-08-20 02:52:00 Sitting is worse than lying down because there is a tendency for blood flow to be constricted in your legs possibly leading to DVT.

It is much better to spend time lying down so that blood flows to your head.....thus improving ability to think.....I always used to get the best ideas when lying in bed ..:clap

What is this used to bit.:D:D
I read somewhere that you do your best thinking on your feet and that definitely applies to me. When I am programming and struggling with something I will often get up and walk around and next minute the penny drops.
