1225152 2011-08-23 16:43:00 Just had one at the VA in Loma Linda and they always give me the anesthesia that causes amnesia too.

The first time - I called them the next day and told them that they didn't do the procedure at all. The whole day was actually mysteriously wiped out of my memory.

I argued with them that they were lying about the whole thing. I accused them of falsifying my medical reports and all sorts of malpractice and malfeasance.

They told me they get the same phone call from most of the patients who've had this done and that my call was just one of many they have to deal with.

I say: get the anesthesia - it's fun trying to remember where you were yesterday - or is it today?

Funny thing though: whenever I hear the phone ring, I have this undeniable urge make a noise like a chicken. It's OK though - the eggs are good.

1225153 2011-08-23 19:10:00 [QUOTE=Billy T;1041485]Yes, I've had that done, they give you a drug that keeps you fully alert and cooperative, but you have no recollection of the procedure when it wears off. I've had it for endoscopy and also for a tooth removal and jawbone preparation for an implant (repairs to car accident damage). I remember sitting down in the chair, and I remember getting out of the chair, but nothing in-between.

I remember even less of the endospcopy, but the surgeon told me afterwards that the drug has the same effect as a "truth drug" (sodium pentathol?) and the medical staff have to treat the theatre like a confessional because the inhibitions go west and it all hangs out.

I'd love to see his 'home' videos!

Good luck, you won't remember it at all if you have sedation and it doesn't hurt until the bill arrives......

Cheers

Talking to my dentist, he gives valium to very nervous patients, but on some, even double dose won't work.

We macho types are not in the habit of doing such a thing.

Hold anything else is ok.

They gave me a nurse to squeeze. That was thoughtful of them - at least until I passed out and they might've played hacky-sack with my head on the floor and I didn't know.

1225157 2011-08-23 23:55:00 Some of these anaesthetics do seem to have side effects.

I had a hip replaced during which I apparently lost, and had replaced, 9 units of blood.

As a precaution I was taken to ICU for the night where the Registrar that assisted with the operation handed me over and announced, in what appeared to be an exceptionally loud voice, “He’s quite stable, but I warn you, he swears a little bit”.

Gulp, I never pursued the issue but I guess I tried to help.

1225158 2011-08-24 00:28:00 I had it done about a year ago. They sprayed my throat but I also had some sort of mild sedation where I vaguely knew what was going on but did not care. I spoke with a friend who said the gag reflex was not pleasant so I clearly told the nurse (before entering the procedure room with the doc) that I did not want to be fully awake. It was an OK time, no big deal actually and there were no bad after effects. Nothing nasty was found, so that was a huge bonus. The nurses, doc, and hospital staff here in Masterton are superb which makes any visit a lot better.

BTW I also have had 3 colonoscopies - after the first one where the surgeon inserted the tube prior to any sedation ("Uggghh!") I wised up and subsequently informed the nurse (again, prior to the procedure) that I definitely wanted the sedation before the insertion. Same big bonus - no nasties found.

Hmmm, did they do them at the same time - one from north and one from the south? That would be interesting if the cameras met in the middle...
