| 1224830 | 2011-08-22 02:58:00 | I get tired of this, Telecom only have a monopoly because noone else wants to spend the money and resources building another network, hardly their fault. And NZ doesn't have the population density or economy to compete with broadband prices available in large cities overseas. Short memory same as Chilling_Silence (well he is new to NZ broadband or has Telecom shares, I cant decide) In the late 90's TelstraSaturn started to roll out a new nation Hybrid/Fibre network starting in Wellington then Christchurch. Even though Telecom s residential cables were mostly on power poles (not to mention ugly power cables), lobbying groups started to appear pressuring local councils especially in Auckland to insist the new Hybrid fibre network be installed under ground even were there were power poles. Yep I remember thinking Telecom must be thrilled at this. It was painfully obvious installing the entire network underground was going to kill the project for rest of the country due to cost and it did. Owww now I am not saying Telecom had any hand in those lobbying groups, I mean what did they have to gain? :p Since then Telecom have stayed one step ahead of the government regulation, smoke screen after smoke screen, its good business but bad for us consumers. |

But it didn't. Because it's just not viable. This is why the vast majority of the roadside whisper cabinets *don't* have gear in them from 3rd party access seekers, coz it was costly enough putting it into the damn Exchange, let alone trying to be cost-effective putting it into a roadside cabinet to feed only a few hundred homes. See here: www.libertarianz.org.nz This is why we're now getting a 3rd international pipe, to bring data into the country, because its going to be cost-effective to do-so. It's not cost-effective to duplicate an existing telephony network. If it was, why hasn't Cable been rolled out outside of Christchurch or Wellington? I stand by dugimodo on this one. |

I mean I love living here and wouldn't go back to live in England but that doesn't mean everything is better here I'm too much of a realist to think that :2cents: |

| 1224835 | 2011-08-22 08:52:00 | See here: www.libertarianz.org.nz None of you believed the final paragraph, did you? . Instead of bullying companies with rules, regulations and one-sided agreements, the government should focus on protecting property rights. Libertarianz would slash taxes and regulations like the RMA, protect private property rights, and allow responsible businesses to operate without interference, said Mr Howison. Then the telecommunications market would be free to do what it does best: provide good services at competitive prices. Like the petrol companies compete or Telecom vs Vodafone. |
