2011-08-21 04:53:00 | I was talking to a mate back in the UK about how useless and expensive BB is here. He didnt believe it and showed me to one of his ISP's sites www.plus.net its about $25 NZD for 60gb BB with up to 20mbps speeds and a wireless router included. Overnight usage appears to be uncapped too. Currently we are getting better (telecoms new total home and orcon + steam) but I don't feel optimistic about the Govt saying ultra fast BB will be rolling out in 2019 with speeds of 100mbps. Even now many ISP's in other country would scoff at 100mbps, by 2019 the govt will be proposing 1gps network infrastructure while the rest of the world rock on with 10 Tbps or something. Wish I was in northland with that uber lot. Right now I'm stuck on 12gb for $50 with orcon. since i am home more now though ill probably get a 30-60gb cap with genius

2011-08-21 05:02:00 | That's what happens when we left it to Telecom to not only rip is all off, but hold us all back! | Digby (677) | |

2011-08-21 11:14:00 | The dark ages? Pffft.... The UK govt has only just mandated that by the end of NEXT year they all get 1mbps. 85% of NZ will be getting 10 -> 20mbps by the end of THIS year. Dark ages? I think not!

2011-08-21 11:19:00 | Sorry, I stand corrected, 2mbps: news.bbc.co.uk It's also worth noting that thanks to Chorus there's already VDSL2 gear in most of the whisper cabinets, which ought to allow speeds of 40 -> 80mbps. Just saying ...

2011-08-21 21:59:00 | AFAIK they're artificially capping it at 30mbps | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2011-08-22 00:02:00 | I get tired of this, Telecom only have a monopoly because noone else wants to spend the money and resources building another network, hardly their fault. And NZ doesn't have the population density or economy to compete with broadband prices available in large cities overseas. People want superfast broadband, great service, and a reliable network, and they want it CHEAP. No thought is put into the massive amount of work and money required to achive this, Nz is very challenging geographically when it comes to building a network. It's not gonna happen, at least not overnight. We live in a beautiful relatively unpolluted country that is not over populated, be happy with that. Every company has to make a profit and keep the shareholders happy, no matter who does it things take time. As we use more and more and speeds increase the prices do tend to come down, but it's not quick. Competition is good, and helps keep prices down but we may never see it reach the levels of overseas countries. That's just how it is.
