1251756 2012-01-02 20:21:00 My grand-daughter's PC has an HP 085CH motherboard.

She has purchased a game that needs a minimum of 256 mb video card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0.

The HP has onboard graphics only. I assume I need to get an AGP card and if so does anyone have any recommendations?

1251757 2012-01-02 20:40:00 what game is she hoping to play? ronyville (10611)
1251758 2012-01-02 21:01:00 It's difficult to answer, as rony asked knowing what game would help. Also are you wanting just the cheapest option to play that game or wanting to make it as good as you can and what's the budget?

There aren't a lot of options new, www.pp.co.nz has a few or trademe could be a better option if you're willing to risk 2nd hand. Just make sure the motherboard is AGP and the case supports full height cards.

Edit: also pay to check what PSU you have if you get anything that requires a bit of power - especially cards that require an seperate power connection.

1251759 2012-01-02 21:14:00 The Game is SIMS Medieval. I don't believe that she will want much more than this.

Still the question though - should I be looking for AGP?

1251760 2012-01-02 21:36:00 No, you will probably need a PCI card, you probably have no AGP slot. Need more details to tell for sure.
What is the model or serial/build number/s of this HP (may be stickers on back or bottom of the computer)?

Is this HP machine a tower or a SFF (small form factor) machine, if it's a SFF you probably won't find a card to fit.

Standalone cards that are installed in vanilla PCI slots (not PCIe or
PCIx or AGP), such as some GeForce FX variants, will perform poorly.here

1251762 2012-01-02 23:08:00 should I be looking for AGP?
No you should be looking to either upgrade the computer or ditch it and get something decent.
Once she's had one game, she'll be playing another............waste of time stuffing around with old tech like that for gaming.

As the game isn't that new or high end, you don't have to go crazy and get the latest hardware, but really, you do need to change it.

1251763 2012-01-02 23:40:00 Depends on how much you want to spend really. Keep in mind the older computers can be rather expensive to upgrade, as well as get parts for. You have to weigh up the price of doing upgrades compared to new.

If this PC is the D530 ( which has that board) then according to HP's Site (h18000.www1.hp.com) the board does in fact have a AGP slot.

Keep in mind that the AGP is now old technology, and finding a new card may be a little harder than the newer PCie. You can still get AGP cards, 256 mb video card they are around about the $100 area, depending on where you get them from. Example: From Ascent (www.ascent.co.nz) --512MB memory.

1251764 2012-01-03 00:27:00 As everyone else has mentioned, AGP is old technology, but if you are tight on a budget and only looking for a video card than this cheap option may help pricespy.co.nz or something like what Wainui mentioned above. ronyville (10611)
