1251444 2011-12-31 19:08:00 I have my grandson's PC to cleanup. When I try to shut the PC off, it restarts.

System is Vista. How can I fix this?

1251445 2011-12-31 19:41:00 When you click start, the shutdown button has an arrow to the right of it click that and choose shutdown gary67 (56)
1251446 2011-12-31 19:48:00 Thanks Gary. Yes I am aware of that. By clicking on that, the system does shutdown only to immediately restart. I'm wondering if it might be a BIOS problem? Bryan (147)
1251447 2011-12-31 20:02:00 Look like Roxio software can cause this (in XP). It maybe the same for Vista. It maybe something in startup, thats causing the restart Speedy Gonzales (78)

Thought I would mention it as I got caught with it when I switched from XP to Win7

You could be right, have a look under power management settings, Wakeup on LAN/Ring/PCI Device etc should all be disabled; my old AMD machine also has a Automatic Power Up on Alarm feature, maybe there is something similar.
Maybe check your CMOS battery too.

1251450 2011-12-31 22:03:00 Is it possible that you could be blue screening on shutdown and then automatically restarting? Just a thought. icow (15313)
1251451 2011-12-31 23:52:00 Check what the actual power buttons are doing. Click start, type in Power open the power settings, Power Options,( you may have to click on change plan settings/advanced) look for These settings (www.howtogeek.com) -- scroll down to the vista instructions. wainuitech (129)
1251452 2012-01-01 04:44:00 Thank you all for the suggestions. Freesumendjinn was on the money, I found that in the BIOS the "Wakeup on LAN" was enabled. I disabled it and now the PC shuts down.

Happy New Year to you all.

1251453 2012-01-01 19:39:00 Yes, I saw this recently on an old machine. The BIOS had mysteriously changed to cause this. linw (53)
