| 1226482 | 2011-08-26 23:27:00 | www.nzherald.co.nz Long story short... a shop at Auckland airport is/was selling black, white and brown golliwogs in his shop for the last few months, never got a complaint. Some nobody American hip hop person who happens to have dark skin complains and feels offended by the black ones. The airport management jump in and order the shop owner to remove the black ones but they can continue to sell the white dolls. Is it just me, or is something screwy here? To be honest, its just a damn doll, black material is just as common as white material, wouldnt a little brown skinned girl prefer to buy a little brown doll to look like part of the family ( a friend of mine's daughter had a doll who she used to call her baby sister until a real baby sister came along). Or are brown skinned families being forced to buy white dolls for their kids to play with? For example, Hone claims he wouldnt want his children dating pakehas, would he let them play with pakeha looking dolls? I bet not. Or does it come down to the name "Golliwog" which some consider offensive, in that case, wouldnt the white dolls have to be banned from sale as well? I'm guessing the Auckland Airport Authorities have some clause built in to shop contracts that they can tell the shop what they can and can't sell, but shame on them for acting like the Gestapo over it. Your thoughts? |

| 1226488 | 2011-08-27 01:23:00 | I think it is pretty racist... I hear ya, but go a bit further and explain why you think that way... Racist the shop owner is selling black coloured dolls (keep in mind he is also selling brown and white ones which dont appear to be a problem - at least not the white ones)? Is it racist now that he is only allowed to sell white dolls and not coloured ones? If he called them another name other than golliwogs, would he then be able to sell any colour dolls he likes? So is the word "golliwogs" considered a racist or offensive word? Is the Auckland Airport management being racist by preventing him from selling a little black dolly but have no issue with the shop selling white dollys? Or, is there another reason this whole issue is racist? |
