1225594 2011-08-24 08:02:00 I'm looking at building a very low power consumption system for use as a web and media server, I've been using my desktop for this, but my power

I can't seem to find anything about buying low voltage CPUs?

Can someone point me in the right direction?

1225595 2011-08-24 08:55:00 You're looking for low wattage not low voltage, IE an Atom integrated board. Alex B (15479)

1225597 2011-08-24 23:08:00 Yeah an integrated intel atom or amd fusion board would be the ultimate for low power. You can also get VIA CPU's but they are quite weak performance wise.

And they all come in ITX form factors so you can build them small as well.

www.pp.co.nz

a couple of examples.
You can also get low power versions of regular CPU's just look at the TDP wattage for an Idea of consumption.

1225598 2011-08-25 01:59:00 The i5 CPUs were meant to have low power when in standby also Gobe1 (6290)
1225599 2011-08-25 02:07:00 and there was me going to ask this self same question. I had thought of using a cheap netbook as a file server with Amahi. Those trimslice machines look nice wonder what they cost gary67 (56)

I think that's pretty good price. $340NZD without HDD. I'd buy it.

Keen on a group buy to save on shipping?

1225601 2011-08-25 07:47:00 Group buys would put you over the $500 threshold of GST, but worse still is the expensive and tedious paperwork for a one-shot private import. R2x1 (4628)

Just bear in mind that it's an ARM-based system. It'll blow Atom stuff out of the water for power efficiency, but you won't be able to install Windows on it.

I'd consider a group buy if we have enough volume to negotiate a decent discount from the vendor; if not then it makes more sense to stay under the threshold for import GST.
