Core 2 Duo, yes, agreed. But remember that my PC cost $920 vs a $2,500 MacBook Air, and mine has more features ;)

1225834 2011-08-28 03:38:00 even though my Eee 1215N is better specced

1225835 2011-08-28 03:40:00 I don't know about pcuser42 but I am not trolling, I'm being serious.

A laptop with only 1 USB port would be a headache (for me). When I use my Toshiba, I often have a mouse plugged in since I don't really like touch-pads anyway (and the gesture thing is certainly nothing I care about either) - then I also often want to use a USB flash drive as well.

Another problem is that the Air comes with no Ethernet, therefore I would have to use the single USB port with a USB Ethernet card. If I wanted to use my mouse and a USB drive as well, I'd need a hub etc. That's just more stuff to play with and get annoyed with.

No DVD drive is also annoying, Having to drag around and bust out the USB DVD drive (and no doubt, hub as well) all the time would get tedious.

Compared to my Toshiba, it's stupid. I've got a DVD drive, a Cardbus slot, A replaceable battery, 3 USB ports, 1 Firewire port, SD\MMC card slot, VGA and S-Video output, an even bigger (17") screen (at 1440 × 900) and a bigger 160GB hard drive (easily upgradeable too, of course).

I've also got Ethernet, AND a dialup modem. I've got the same 2GB of RAM, but could upgrade to 4GB if I wanted, since my machine has standard RAM slots. And I've got a power adapter with a standard DC barrel jack I could replace easily and cheaply if needed.

Yes the thing is heavier, in fact, it weighs a ton, but it does everything I need and want, it's still portable and I would never cart it around to starbucks etc anyway.

For serious portability, I use my Eee PC, which despite being tiny has 3 USB ports, Ethernet, VGA output, SD Card slot, Replaceable battery, inbuilt webcam and microphone (and Mic jack), upgradeable RAM and upgradeable SSD (provided you can solder the mini-PCIE connector on for my particular model, many other models already have the connector) AND once again the power adapter is no proprietary Magsafe that cost $$$ to repair every time it breaks.

(Remember Apple was sued because of the Magsafe connector breaking all the time, burning, and catching fire etc etc)

For actual features, common sense, and cost, I would choose a normal laptop or netbook over a Macbook Air any time.

I would certainly buy a normal Macbook before I bought an Air.

PS: I see the newer Air models have 2 USB ports, an SD card reader, and more RAM and bigger SSD. An improvement, but still leaves a lot to be desired.

Where did you get that price for a MBA?

So in conclusion most of your information is out of date, so is your infrastructure if you're still using Ethernet your tosh has pretty meh featuers inc screen res for its size (my 15 is 1680x1050) no one uses dvd anymore and the MBA is still a unique product that others are trying to catch up on and failing (Samsung 9 series more expensive not specced as well)

+1

1 usb port is just stupid.

My laptop has 2 usb ports, and a usb hub is in one of them, and even with have 5 usb ports with the hub (including the spare on the laptop) that sometimes isn't even enough.

Educated guess :p

EDIT: Here we go, the cheapest Macbook Air I could find is $1,300 (pricespy.co.nz). Still, for less we were able to buy a Toshiba laptop with 4GB RAM standard, replaceable battery and upgradeable 500GB hard drive, as well as a Core i3.

no one uses dvd anymore

And you base this claim on what?

my dvd drives get daily use. so you are incorrect.

1225841 2011-08-28 04:50:00 Ok.. we are going to the UK for 5 weeks. Take my 15" MacBook Pro or my 3G WiFi iPad?

The iPad 2 wins hands down. Pick up a micro sim card in just about any town in the UK = Internet and eMail for the trip..

Mains power charger, 12 volt car charger and 10 hours battery life under normal usage.

Built in GPS and Maps will go well in the hire car.. Installed are plenty of family photos for the rellies, Books, Magazines and Music for flights and quiet times, 10 hour battery helps there.. Touring itinerary & hotel info in pdf. Spreadsheets to keep track of expenditure.
Alarm clock, Calendar, Diary, Compass and as many other Apps as needed or wanted including a scanner app.
The built in cameras are mainly for fun or 'facetime' as we have a decent one.

It's a great piece of very easily carried kit that anyone can use.. Absolutely brilliant when stuck in hospital too.

Lion is also great on my MacBook Pro, some changes but not that many more than usual, no problems using it at all. It's the fifth Apple OSX I have installed.

Some enjoy their windows boxes, others love their Macs.. why the Hate? I have owned, reformatted & used both... have you?

Apple makes the stuff I enjoy using every day and I'm gutted that Steve Jobs health has obviously declined too much for him to carry on as CEO. I wish him nothing but the best..
