1252359 2012-01-05 21:26:00 Hello guys, I have really weird problem. I was trying to reinstall windows xp on my friends computer, but it freezes on loading files, i erased and partitioned
hdd with partition magic (ntfs) but still no luck. also tested ram with memtest from hiren's bootCD but no errors. finally tried to install windows 7 but there was the same problem, freezes after copying files.

any ideas?

1252360 2012-01-06 00:14:00 Try doing a full zero erase of the drive but don't manually partition it. Let Windows do the partitioning and formatting itself.

I have also seen newer OS have issues on some older hardware, you might need to look for a BIOS update if the PC is quite old.

Some more details on the system specifications and configuration would be very useful.

yea I was thinking about bios too.
don't exactly remember details but its AMD 2,4ghz 2gb of ram and the motherboard is m2n-sli delux (asus)

I was also thinking installing windows xp sp2 instead of sp3 but not sure if that will work

1252362 2012-01-06 09:10:00 What speed is the RAM set to?

have a look at This MS help Thread (social.technet.microsoft.com) The last post. :2cents:

1252364 2012-01-06 09:25:00 Board isn't old enough to have the kind of BIOS issues I was thinking of, but you could always try the latest version just for fun.

Are you using your hard drive with the JMicron JMB363 SATA controller by any chance? I think I remember something about these being unable to install an OS on, but can be used for storage.

Otherwise, try resetting BIOS to defaults. Might be a bad setting somewhere.

hard drive is barracuda by seagate. also tried to reset bios by defaults but still no luck :(

I suppose it can be bios update issue or ram is dying

Is the HDD IDE or SATA? Which port is it plugged into? Might even be a faulty HDD, do you have another you can try?

If you have more than 1 stick of RAM, try taking out all except 1, then try installing again. If the install still won't work, swap that 1 stick for one of the others and try again.

I have experienced in one case a machine that had BSOD errors constantly, while Memtest showed nothing wrong, however when the RAM was replaced, no more BSOD.

Yep -- Had that happen several times as well, I also ran MS's RAM test and that showed OK.
