1227574 2011-08-31 05:24:00 Came with Vista on it but I had updated it to 7. New hard drive so I dunno how they restored it, maybe one of the techies here can enlighten me? xyz823 (13649)
1227575 2011-08-31 05:27:00 When you say , you had updated it to 7 did you do a fresh install, or was it from a update DVD ?

What more than likely happened is since it came originally with Vista, they simply put back the default factory image, which of course wasn't a W7 upgrade / Install.

Which of course would mean any data will be gone as well.

I clean installed Windows 7 after wiping both the main partition and the recovery partition. Yea, doesn't bother me too much, just a pain in the ass. Couldn't they have just made an image of the old hard drive and put that on the new one? I dunno why it even got replaced, it seemed to work fine when I had it.

One of the policies of big manufactures is when doing repairs (More so under warranty) if they need to test or replace hardware, (they may have tested the drive and it showed bad sectors)they put back factory images, thats actually the first thing the help lines often say -- "do a factory reinstall, then if the PC/Laptop is still playing up we will look at hardware", unless its obvious theres a hardware fault to begin with, That way there is no corruption or driver problems running from the factory image.

If you wanted to use your original install, assuming they had to change hardware they will have charged you, and very expensive charges as well.

To them time = Money (big time), so if hardware is changed its a factory image put back, takes them all of 5 minutes then test & send back to the customer.

Smaller repair places often care more about the customers and some go the extra distance to be helpful -- only some, others are right "beeeeeeeep" :D

Yea they wanted over $100 just for data backup!!! I've got the old hard drive here so I'll get the data off at some point . I'm deciding whether or not to install Ubuntu alongside Windows 7 atm .

Just got the windows installer loaded up off the DVD, found out there is now a 500GB HDD in there!!! It was previously only a 320Gb!

I would recommend installing Ubuntu as well, it's quite useful
