1227555 2011-08-31 02:02:00 Doesn't surprise me. There is more complexity than a traditional phone. Plus it's not that much cheaper. Nomad (952)
1227556 2011-08-31 03:37:00 I was thinking briefly about going back to Orcon. I have taken the wait and see approach and stayed with Actrix. Just as well I think.

I came across this site called Consumer Telme (www.telme.org.nz). It is similar to Consumer Powerswitch. Have I got any reason to be suspicious of it? I filled in my details and it recommended 2degrees and Orcon. I still intend to wait and see.

1227557 2011-08-31 03:46:00 Yeah. It's nice that it's an all-in-one device, but it's bugger all different from their previous Orcon HomeHub device with the exception that you don't need to plug a phone into the device, it's instead built right in.

There's a lot that can go wrong, and does go wrong with VoIP going residential. Number porting issues (Like the sounds of that Rebecca Jones was suffering from -- Usually resolved after a couple of hours on their own), router issues, line reliability issues, and the list goes on...

If I were doing it, here's what I'd do:
- Mandate a specific type of router that *must* be used. I'd opt for something of decent quality, such as the NetComm. Anything else is 100% unsupported.
- Deploy Linksys SPA2102's, they're centrally provisioned and a whole ton of other nifty features. Lock those suckers down so the end-user can't bugger around with them. I've done mass-provisioning of the devices, they're amazing, and literally leave everything else for dead
- Require they're on an EUBA connection
- Warn them that the phone can be down for up to 4 hours PRIOR to the end-user signing up for the switch (Many people get pissed off when they find out about that late in the switch process)
- Get staff in well in advance for the extra sign-ups, as well as helpdesk queries that will be generated. Sounds like Orcon are, but just a little late in the game.
- Require that the user is getting at least 10mbps before letting them sign up
- QoS the hell outta the customer lines, at all times restrict 85kbps for one VoIP call. Potentially 165kbps for two concurrent calls even.
- Spread out number ports. Advise customers well in advance that because of the number of parties involved in the porting process, it will take anywhere from 3 -> 6 business days. Don't do a whole batch on one day and then none the next. Also, do them in the morning, leaves all afternoon to sort out any potential issues before COB.

It's not difficult to do right, Xnet with their VFX service so far have been the most 'on the ball' from what I've seen...

1227558 2011-08-31 03:54:00 No problems with my Genius so far, its working well and has done since I plugged it in. Couldn't be happier with it. DeSade (984)
1227559 2011-08-31 05:07:00 I never had Xnets VOIP work properly so I don't care. Like my landline.

That Consumer thing - I ran it's questionnaire - and I have done this myself too - it's crap. It kind of ignored about the tolls selection I chose, and then went with the cheapest offerings, Orcons thing at top.
Bollocks.

That is exactly what I thought. I am not in a hurry to move from Actrix yet. Who knows what plans the other ISPs (including Actrix) are going to come up with in the near future.

1227561 2011-08-31 07:22:00 Brand new product, first of its kind in NZ, expect problems. Give them 6 months and it will be sweet. Saw the same thing with XT.

Will shift to genius soon i'd say
