1226980 2011-08-29 12:13:00 Hi folks, on the scrounge for free advice again... I have bought a new TV and can't get my Sennheiser wireless earphones to work.

Basically these new TVs have got b- all outlets, and there isn't an analogue AV outlet to connect to the amplifier (where the wireless earphone base station is attached). So I bought a digital audio cable and connected that from the TV digital audio out to the amp digital audio in.

The amp seems to be mapped correctly to the digital audio input, because it plays the telly sound through the amp's speakers, via the correct channel - Video 1. Same as with the old TV.

However, the wireless earphones are silent - they just hum. Presumably they are analogue - the base station connection to the amp is two (red and white) plugs (are they called RCA plugs?). Two questions:

1. Will analogue headphones work when the input to the amp is digital?

2. If I have to buy a replacement set (digital), do you have any recommendations for a brand/model?

Yes, if there is an analogue out. I haven't seen an amp that doesn't have an analogue out.

The best way to sort these sort of problems is to post pictures of all of the components interconnectors (yes I just made that word up). And then it would be easy to tell you what you need to do.

Also, the brand and model number of the amp would be helpful.

1226982 2011-08-29 21:59:00 There should be two rca plugs for audio out.
My 32 inch samsung has them, its a few years old, and my parents newer tv has them but they use optical to the receiver.

Not all tv's have them.

I've seen a few that don't have any outputs.

1226986 2011-08-29 22:37:00 hmm should have worded that better.
I thought all newer tvs had rca audio outputs?

1226987 2011-08-29 23:08:00 One of mine has a 3.5mm headphone jack for it's audio out, the other has rca and digital optical.

Your amp may not decode the digital to an analogue output, depending on format there may be downmixing required as well. Pine-o-cleen's suggestion of a photo is a good Idea, particularly the back of the amp.

Otherwise, brand and model of the TV as well as the AMP would help.

1226988 2011-08-30 01:17:00 Thanks everyone. The TV is a Samsung 40" Full HD LED TV UA40D6600. The amp is an Onkyo TX-SR followed by a series of numbers (and I do not know which one is mine - 604/604E, 8640, 674/674E, 8467. The same manual covers all of them.

As I said in my original post, there are no audio outlets other than digital - there are no RCA outlets other than those that are part of the component and AV connectors.

I have attached scans from the respective manuals showing the dearth of connectors on the TV, and the embarrassment of riches on the amp...

The connections are as follows:

Component cable into Samsung supplied adaptor connects the only place it can go on the TV (see diagram) to DVD HD recorder - all working.
AV connection (composite cable into Samsung supplied adaptor) connects TV to Sky box - all working.
LAN connection on TV via ethernet cable to ethernet network in the house - all working.
Digital audio out on the TV (not shown on the tv diagram) to Digital audio in1 on the amp (marked 1 on the amp diagram).
Video1 RCA outlets on amp to Wireless headphone base station. Video1 is marked 17 on the amp diagram.

Digital input signal format selection is set to automatic. The amp shows that the signal format it is receiving is PCM. When the amp is set to Video1, the input source is shown as Opt1, and the amp plays the TV audio, so it appears as though everything is connected properly and I have selected the right input and signal format for the amp.

The wireless headphones play CD and Tuner sound when those sources are chosen (I haven't tried the DVD). However, I do not receive TV audio on the headphones when Video1 is selected.

1226989 2011-08-30 04:16:00 Hmmm, well I have not solved the original problem yet, but I have found a work around. I unplugged the wireless base station from the amp, and plugged it into the spare audio outputs (RCA) on the back of the DVD HD Recorder, and that works. This simply means that if I want to use the headphones I will have to have the DVD switched on (I presume), but that is hardly a biggie. At last we are back to what passes for "normal" for our household - whenever there is a clash of taste between SWMBO and me about me watching a particular programme (e.g. Tour de France), I can watch it with Herself in the same room and no sound to bother Her.
