1252305 2012-01-06 08:45:00 Cant always trust the SMART report, -- If you want to test the drive for bad sectors, one program I use is HDD-Regenerator (www.softpedia.com). You dont need to pay for it to actually do a scan.

Ran scan of hard drive. Detected no bad sectors or errors at all so I'm guessing the hard drive is most likely ok then ?

1252306 2012-01-06 09:01:00 so just tried a repair install - and guess what I can't do one as apparently my version of windows on the PC is newer than the DVD I have (even though it was loaded from the DVD back in June!!) Now I'm stumped. globe (11482)

1252308 2012-01-06 09:20:00 Probably some updates you installed since then make it think it's newer. Agent_24 (57)
1252309 2012-01-06 20:08:00 You more than likely know this anyway, but just in case:

You know its recommended to do a repair install from within windows, NOT from booting the DVD as per XP or when you first install it ??

Its a PITA esp if the original W7 wont boot. Tutorial repair install Windows 7 (www.sevenforums.com)

yeah did that exercise overnight (as per the link) and has not seemed to make too much difference. Boot up time is still at 3 1/2 mins which seems way too slow to me (my missus laptop is way faaster than that) but then again maybe my expectations are shifting andf the load time hasn't.

Next question to ask (other than where to from here) is how long does your guys systems take to load ? Maybe I need a benchmark to work from ?

1252311 2012-01-06 20:53:00 Just timed it. 24-26 secs from post screen, till you hear the sound (after windows has loaded). Win7 x64 Speedy Gonzales (78)

Win7 x64 Yeah those sorts of numbers are what I remember when I first built this machine and on the missus lappie. 3.5min seems somewhat excessive - even if you have a super turbo charged machine and I have a little 1100cc (which isn't the case) globe (11482)

Just did some tests for ya :)

5 different PC's.
As a exact same point of reference, its from when the "Starting Windows" pops up on the screen. The reason for that point is different hardware takes longer to get to that point, posting will take longer or shorter depending on thehardware. My sons PC which has the most grunt shows starting windows within 3 seconds, workshops ones take about 10 seconds to that point.

So the actual times, from Starting windows to up and running able to use as well as the specs: ( password entered as well)

Workshop 1 P43.0 2GB RAM = 1min 15 sec
Workshop 2 P4 3.0 2GB RAM = 50 sec
Sons i5 3.33 4GB RAM = 51 sec ( has A LOT of crap loading in the background)
Mine Q6600 2.4 8GB RAM = 1min 10 sec ( has a lot of network connections going on as well)
SWMBO E5300 2.6 4GB RAM = 40 sec

Just timed workshop 2 this time fresh install windows (From a image) , no other crap loading = 25 seconds
