1252294 2012-01-05 08:58:00 Cant always trust the SMART report, -- If you want to test the drive for bad sectors, one program I use is HDD-Regenerator ( . softpedia . com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/HDD-Regenerator . shtml" target="_blank">www . softpedia . com) . You dont need to pay for it to actually do a scan .

You make the bootable CD, then run from that - depending on the size of the drive it may be an over night test or longer, unless it finds bad sectors reasonable early on .

Its meant to actually repair damaged sectors :illogical BUT I would trust any software to do that, BUT its excellent at detecting bad sectors when other software fails . (including SMART shows its clean)

If it shows lots of errors ( bad sectors) the drive can be replaced under warranty - bad sectors are covered

1252295 2012-01-05 09:15:00 My other option I guess is to pick a restore point further back and see if that works? If it doesn't then more likely to be hardware I'm guessing? globe (11482)
1252296 2012-01-05 09:16:00 Not sure if you have tried the seagate tools. Add a similar issue as yours. Windows would take longer than usual to boot up. And it was a new built as well. 4 months old. Ran the seagate tools and found that one of the secondary drives had issues. Pulled that drive out and all was sweet again. ronyville (10611)
1252297 2012-01-05 09:47:00 My other option I guess is to pick a restore point further back and see if that works? If it doesn't then more likely to be hardware I'm guessing? Restore points going backwards like suggested sometimes work, other times makes no difference, all depends on whats causing the problem. Even if it is software related as in damage to the OS, it may be to deep in the OS and out of the restore points actual fixes.

Something you can try --- start the PC in safe mode, keep tapping F8 on startup, select safe mode -- does it start up quicker or just the same ?

If its a hardware issue like a failing or damaged drive, then usually it wont make a scarp of difference in ether mode Normal or Safe.

1252298 2012-01-05 18:36:00 so ive run the windows defender thingymejig and that found one trojan that i removed. didnt make a difference to the start up speed but always useful to get rid of stuff like that anyway.

STarted in safe mode and have noted that it was faster for one part. What i mean by this was when i turn on the machine the motherboard screen shows and then after a while the loading systems loads and the windows logo appears and then finally the log on page. when started in the safe mode the loading of the operating system was much faster (except the mouse didnt work so I had to hard reset - doh) but get from turning on to the loading of the operating system was still very slow.

WIll try the hdd regenerator today.

1252299 2012-01-05 20:54:00 For what it is worth. I had a similar problem last week W7 64bit. Pretty much eliminated malware and/or hardware problems. HJ This file looked ok. The machine seemed to spend a lot of time looking for something. I did a repair install and it is now back to normal. CliveM (6007)

1252302 2012-01-06 06:29:00 Yeah right, If you had really read through some of the threads you would have realised that most on here would have suggested Ccleaner.
