1227691 2011-08-31 11:45:00 Gee remember that 99 year old who drove the wrong way up the Ngauranga Gorge, had a crash and then claimed he was quite a good driver.

You would think after 99 years he would have twigged that there simply isn't any right way to be in the Ngauranga Gorge, nor will there ever be. ;)

And? At what age should people be banned from this? Anyone can have an accident, anyone can get a sudden medical problem - Billy T was how old when he first had a heart problem?

No-one died, calm down people, the kids helped - they have a few clues unlike some over excitable parents.

1227693 2011-08-31 20:44:00 I don't know... I drive a school minivan at 68yrs. Most of the idiots are young men, and also women picking up their kids from schools. Then there are the ones who should never have had a licence in the first place.

Ken

I lived across the road from a creche for a while, the mothers are the most shocking drivers I have ever witnessed. Feisty too.

Well put. Agreed.

Yes there should be a 2km no parking, no dropping off zone around all schools and crèche's make them all walk, mothers are some of the very worst drivers at those times and it would help solve the obese parents and kids if they all had to walk :2cents:

Dead right there squire. These scum are blocking up the roads for no good reason. Blonde hair big 4 wheel drives and bad attitude.
These are West Coast kids we are talking about not city slickers or townies/fruitloops they just did what they they had to do.
If it was in Auckland the parents would up in arms and making a scene, I would bet the bus driver even has support from the Coasters, would rather have him driving my kidz to school than a 25 year old P user.

You're right, it's 82, not 87 - my mistake.

This person may hold a valid licence but don't forget that unlike a younger person, an older person's health condition do change fairly fast - from day to day (even from time to time). It's lucky that no one injured or died in this incidence. Must we wait until someting really nasty happens before we do something about it?

However, I do respect this 82-year-old driver for working so hard at his age, as compared to those who don't want to work. I would suggest him to take up some other jobs - please take the innocent young lives into consideration. Certain jobs are only suitable for certain age group of people; for example, a aeroplane pilot (can it be a commercial pilot or a fighter plane pilot) would you think that a 80+ person is suitable for the tasks? Would you feel comfortable to go onboard an aircraft knowing that the pilot is a 80+ year old? Would you expect a 80+ to fly a fighter plane to protect your nation?

1227698 2011-08-31 23:37:00 Would you get on an Air New Zealand plane if the pilot came on and said.

T h i s is y y y o u r pilot speaking.
I have just driven in from my rest home.
When I was flying Tiger Moths we did not have these auto pilot things.
What are those big round things hanging from the wings.

It is ridicicolous that people of such an age should be allowed to drive buses, regardless what any medical says.

The law of averages says that they are more likely to have a heart attack or stroke at that age than a guy of say 45.
Not only that their reaction times are bound to be much less.

I say age 65 should be the cut off.

1227699 2011-08-31 23:53:00 There are a lot of "Older" people still working here. Why?. Because the community needs them. School bus drivers, Meals on Wheels, Age Concern. St Johns transport bus beween hospitals. ETC. ETC.

Often how would places like the West Coast survive. The Older people have the licences & experience, if not perfect health. They have consiences & are willing to help others.

I am sure that there are lots of younger folk who are not working who could do these jobs, if they could be bothered. PJ
