1253195 2012-01-11 06:23:00 Yeah thanks man im going with the i7 2600k and the 8gb of 1600mhz ram. Slankydudl (16687)
1253196 2012-01-22 08:09:00 do you think a website will give me a deal if i get all the parts from them? Slankydudl (16687)
1253197 2012-01-22 08:33:00 What are you doing with this pc? If you're going hyper threading heavy the 2600k is great but for games and the likes the 2500k is probably a better choice. The 2600k will have little or no performance increase over a 2500k in most games. icow (15313)
1253198 2012-01-22 13:27:00 I'd go i7 because it's i7.

Also I got a deal from pb tech, though i got a quote over the phone and then went in to pick up the parts. I imagine if you email them or something you could get a deal, i know for sure that computer lounge does bundle deals if you post on their forums what you want. They also recommend up/down grades and such too.

1253199 2012-01-22 19:14:00 $200 extra for this? www.anandtech.com I personally don't see much point. icow (15313)
1253200 2012-01-22 19:45:00 I think we've made the point pretty well for i5 vs i7, some people just want the fastest though and that's their choice :)
I would still recommend spending the extra $200 on the graphics if it would make a faster card affordable. I have a GTX580 myself and it doesn't seem to break a sweat gaming at 1080P with everything cranked up and I don't expect to need an upgrade for quite some time. My i5 seldom exceeds 30-50% loading while gaming so it's not slowing anything down :)

1253201 2012-01-22 20:07:00 yeah I have been thinking about the i5... it seems like a much better choice and then ill have some money left over. And for the gpu id rather stick with amd and the only single gpu card they got higher is the 7970 which costs an arm and a leg and also would function best on pcie 3.0

I am however going to wait for ivybridge so that i can get a mobo that supports pcie 3.0 for future proofing.

1253202 2012-01-22 20:53:00 Bottom line summary from my point of view going back to your original question;

The specs you started with are great and will play anything.
It's a very nice graphics card and if you prefer AMD is a great way to go, will play anything currently available very nicely.
Intel is the better gaming CPU for now and i7 > i5 > Phenom or other AMD
i7 is overkill for gaming and adds very little for the price difference over i5
8GB is enough currently, 16GB might be good in future.
Any good quality PSU over 600W should be enough for a single graphics card, 750 - 850W would cover all but the most extreme of dual card setups

Waiting for ivy bridge isn't a bad idea, just bear in mind there will always be something new coming no matter what you buy so at some point you just have to do it :)

1253203 2012-01-22 21:31:00 "just bear in mind there will always be something new coming no matter what you buy so at some point you just have to do it" yeah you said it. And since the i5 is so much cheaper i might actually go with it instead and Thanks for the advice everyone its been really helpful. Slankydudl (16687)
1253204 2012-01-28 22:14:00 can anyone recommend a good surge protector?
I am looking at a Belkin Surge Protection 400VA UPS Battery Backup. would this be suitable or not?
