1254126 2012-01-14 16:18:00 I got my laptop about a year and a half ago (the warranty was one year) and neverhad any problems until a few months ago, when my screen started cutting out. Like if I would try to adjust the angle of the screen, it would turn black, white, or stripey. It started out not too bad, but it got to the point wher it was hard to find an angle that worked. I was told that was probable a loose wire somewher, and hadn't had the chance to get it fixed.
Also, when I was charging it, a big 'X' would appear over the battery symbol and tell me I needed to replace the battery and that it wasn't charging, but when I unplugged it, it had charged fine.
THen, about a month ago, I went to turn it on and I got a windos screen that looked really out of date, and it told me I had to restore my computer to a safe point, which I tried to do, but it would say 'restoring' four hours and hours and hours. I turned it off, and when I turned it back on, it wouldn't start up. The power and wifi lights came on, and the fans started going, but it sounded like it does when it's in hibernation, as opposed to the way it sounds when it's actually running.
I know nothing about computers. And I don't know how to fix it. So any help would be much appreciated.

1254127 2012-01-15 04:14:00 Working backwards --- Because it was turned off part way through a system restore, you will find it more than likely has totally screwed the OS -- it cant go forwards, cant go backwards. Best bet for that is recover any data from the drive and reinstall. To recover you can do it one of several ways, either by a bootable CD, something like Linux then transfer the data to a removable drive, or remove the drive, slave it to another PC and see if it can be copied off that way.

As for the screen & battery problem , does sound like a loose or damaged connection, some sort of hardware failure. "should" have gotten it looked at while it was still in warranty. Mind you , under the CGA, (if you are in NZ) it should last longer than that, you may be able to push to have HP repair it under warranty, depends if you want to have a fight on your hands and stick to your guns as the saying goes regarding the age of it.
