I recall CHP rigidly enforced 55mph (I know, when I slowed to 95mph coming back to LA from Tijuana one night, CHP caught up with me. But that's another story). On long holiday weekends, where was there a mass exodus from LA to Las Vegas, the California Highway Patrol used to drive in the centre lane of the Freeway with a roof sign saying "It's 55", with individual cars spaced every 10 miles. There was always a back up of cars between each 55mph block. Then when the California cops reached the state border with Nevada and turned back, it was all on. The start of the Le Mans. (Nevada had a prima facie speed limit where if you weren't driving dangerously, it was legal). PS the 95mph sequel was a court appearance wherein I apologised to the Court and the US as a "visitor to [your] country" ... and got off with a $85 fine. I had no shame in those days :horrified |
