1254590 2012-01-17 00:19:00 I have a Sandisk Cruzer 16GB USB stick. Yesterday I tried adding some files to it and I got the message 'disk write protected'. I checked for a physical write-protect button; there is none.
I tried unticking the 'read-only' box in Windows (7) explorer but it wouldn't let me do it. I tried re-formatting the drive but still get the 'write-protect' message.
I tried Sandisk and other storage websites for a disk utility tool. None of them work.
I tried a registry edit which has been known to work before, but that didn't fix the issue.

1254592 2012-01-17 00:48:00 This sounds like your prob (forums.sandisk.com)

Is it formatted in FAT32 or NTFS?? If Fat32, that maybe one reason...Even tho its 16 GB, you wont get 16 GB of files on it

1254593 2012-01-17 00:51:00 See if this works, Plug in the USB drive, look at its drive letter un "Computer" (lets say its F)

Click start, type in CMD, right click it, ran as administrator, at the prompt:

Type: format F: ( or change to what yours is)
At message: "Insert new disk ....." press 'Enter' key.
At message "Format cannot run because volume is in use ........ would you like to force a dismount on this volume? <Y/N>" press the 'Y' key.

it may start to format - depending on the drive, it will take a minute or two.
