| 1229977 | 2011-09-10 03:09:00 | Just a thought here - if the NZRU was to make a 'Kiwi' opening ceremony, what kind of things would they put in it? The old country, The sea voyage to the brave new world, The landing on a rugged hostile coast, The new land populated by savage warrior cannibals, the hardship, the wars, the treaty,The transformation and creation of the brave new world, Building a country from nothing to being on the world stage, From bush to a powerhouse (relative to size), The civilization, the accomplishments of NZ thanks to the hard work and effort of her people, all drawn to the point when we can invite the world in to celebrate our achievements. A sporting superstar, an agriculture powerhouse, technology, academic performance,Health care, education, welfare (that one backfired) leading the world blah blah blah. Finish it off with a bbq and some beers. Or. We could spin some poi's and poke out some tongues, And be ashamed of what we have achieved. The colonists discovered a crap hole and built paradise. |

Its about time this country grew the hell up. And the first step is to consign the treaty to history, it done what it was designed to do, it allowed two cultures to grow together, now its being used by revisionists to divide it and install racist policy and attitudes. Then write a new document to define the country, One where all people here are afforded the same rights regardless of genetics. |

| 1229981 | 2011-09-10 03:37:00 | Len Brown just said they estimated 200,000 people were down at the waterfront. I think everyone's being very negative about this - whenever there is a gathering of people like this you are always going to get a few muppets. There were 64 arrests last night I believe - 64! Out of 200,000? Well done, I say. It's absolutely fantastic to see that many people get behind the world cup. Obviously the main issue that needs to be addressed is the public transport. No transport system in a city of 1.5 million or so is going to be able to cope with that kind of influx without some issues. There was probably four times as many people as what the organizers were expecting at the waterfront, according to various news reports. The trains do need to be sorted, and some adjustment made in regards to organizing the ferry terminal, but everything else, at least from here, seemed to go very well. We kiwis are far too negative. :2cents: I just posted this on Google + To be fair, I don't think anywhere would have easily coped with the influx of people to the CBD yesterday, although the trains were a disaster (and are supposed to be the silver bullet for Auckland's transports woes!!! There's a Tui billboard!). My usual walk from work to the Ferry Buildings at the bottom of town is 1.5km and usually takes me about 10-15 minutes - depending on how energetic I'm feeling (or how late for the ferry I am). Yesterday I left around an hour earlier than normal (should have been more!) and tried to walk through the Viaduct - bad mistake! :D Instead I walked around the back of the Viaduct area and came out on Quay Street. It took me 25 minutes to get from the Price Waterhouse building (cnr Albert and Quay) to the Ferry Building (PricewaterhouseCoopers near Albert Street, Auckland Central, Auckland to Ferry Buildings,Quay Street, Auckland (maps.google.co.nz et,+Auckland+Central,+Auckland&daddr=Ferry+Buildings,Quay+Street,+Auckland&hl=en&sll=-36.841061,174.765787&sspn=0.0181,0.02944&geocode=FdjRzf0dr7VqCiFhPZGDmq6xaynJFXeg-UcNbTGNgSuzWNkZ8Q%3BFSfSzf0dQbpqCiELJkyvztQbqykzj7 UV-UcNbTH0DBfLyUK8Ww&vpsrc=0&mra=prev&t=m&z=15)). That's less than 100 metres!!! Hot, sweaty, smelly, semi-pissed people standing so close together you couldn't see daylight between them and all pushing in different directions. Insanity! Didn't need to go to the gym yesterday after that workout! The ferries in Auckland are a joke - and I should know, as I've been using them on a daily basis for the last 10 years or so. Too many different organisations involved in making management decisions around the ferry services and components thereof: Fullers (the ferry operators) are a monopoly - certainly on the major commuting links - and therefore have no real interest in improving things unless they are forced to by other parties. Also, the boats break down regularly and passengers are forced to use (mostly) older inferior boats while the 'new' boats get repaired. They bought two used boats around 2 years ago from a tour operator on the Great Barrier Reef - boats that are suited to tours, not commuting. While they are both comfortable (though unreliable) they do not allow passengers easy/efficient boarding and do not cater well for cycle commuters Public transport hubs I have visited overseas are streets ahead in terms of efficiency, cleanliness, and technology. Then there is another organisation (Auckland Council?) responsible for the wharves (maintenance) and parking at the wharves is 'looked after' by Auckland Transport (another organisation that needs a rocket). As an example of their ineptitude, they were upgrading (replacing) one of the piers 10 days before the RWC Opening Night. It got it's first use on Friday morning. Yesterday. Why they couldn't have scheduled major construction earlier in the year I have no idea! Any improvements suggested by the ferry passengers have to go through multiple channels to even get considered. And mostly the answer is "we have no sway over that area - "so-and-so" is responsible for that" - and it goes into the too hard basket. Fullers still have people at the gates clipping tickets. In this day and age! F F S! So every time you want to get on or off the pier, you have to join a queue. No wonder it was a shambles at the ferries last night! </rant> |
