Not the first time morons have pushed the emergency buttons... we have one week to get this right for next time.

1229970 2011-09-09 23:56:00 You can't idiot proof events, or forums for that matter. Never underestimate the depths of idiocy especially in crowds and anonymous forums.

You are annoyed at what you perceive as racial favouritism so you make racist comments yourselves? ironic. Grow up, if you are guilty of it yourself then you have no right to point at others.
I'm 100% of european descent, a 5th generation kiwi, and I have not the slightest problem with the content of the opening ceremony.

You could have expressed your opinions without resorting to this rubbish.

1229972 2011-09-10 00:18:00 Len Brown just said they estimated 200,000 people were down at the waterfront. I think everyone's being very negative about this - whenever there is a gathering of people like this you are always going to get a few muppets. There were 64 arrests last night I believe - 64! Out of 200,000? Well done, I say. It's absolutely fantastic to see that many people get behind the world cup.

Obviously the main issue that needs to be addressed is the public transport. No transport system in a city of 1.5 million or so is going to be able to cope with that kind of influx without some issues. There was probably four times as many people as what the organizers were expecting at the waterfront, according to various news reports.

The trains do need to be sorted, and some adjustment made in regards to organizing the ferry terminal, but everything else, at least from here, seemed to go very well.

We kiwis are far too negative. :2cents:

1229973 2011-09-10 00:42:00 90% of the so called spectacle was Maori/Islander based.

I guess the 90% of the white population that I am part of can go to hell.

I embarrassed to be a Kiwi :(

I would love to see some exciting creative thinking in an opening performance. Wherever they occur, they always seem to re-hash old legends and "tell a story" with dancers, people on wires, stilts etc. Within this de-facto standard format, they are all boring now, no matter where they are what "story" they are representing.

I agree NZs reliance on Maori legend and performance to show a distinct face to the world is wearing thin. But also, considering that approx 24% of Aucklanders are Asian, 15% Polynesion and 5-10% Maori, the myth behind "we, the great white silent majority" is just that - a myth.

1229974 2011-09-10 00:52:00 Just a thought here - if the NZRU was to make a 'Kiwi' opening ceremony, what kind of things would they put in it?

I'm as guilty as anyone of whinging about the Maori having such a big involvement in events like this, but when we actually sit down and think up ideas for a properly 'kiwi' opening ceremony, they are rather thin on the ground. Would be interested to see what other people think, it's all well and good saying you're sick of everything being focused on Maori, but what would you do?
