1230442 2011-09-12 06:57:00 There were components on the original XP release that basically broadcast the existence of the system across at least one protocol.

I think it was Messenger service related, but as a security issue it was a damned stupid feature to have on by default... screaming out the equivalent of "here I am, this port is open to you all".

1230443 2011-09-12 09:05:00 Quite fun putting an unpatched XP machine directly on the internet. Within minutes you'll have all sorts of nasty stuff on it
I have never yet owned a patched version of Windows. This one is unpatched.

I do generally use the SPs but this version of Windows currently is SP free.

I do not have infections either.

I have seen plenty of patched PCs with masses of malware however.

1)Have 3rd party protection
2)Avoid being a target

1230444 2011-09-12 21:04:00 Yes but you also hide behind a DSL router which uses NAT to filter out all those nasties that would get you from the likes of the sasser / blaster worms, correct?

Connect directly, no firewall, with your machine actually totally exposed as it is unpatched, and then we'll see who's laughing ;)

would that description apply to almost everyone
best protection against nasties: a bit of common sense: think twice before clicking that mouse button.
One of the common fake AV infections required the user to click 4x to allow the infection in !!!!

1230446 2011-09-13 10:28:00 Try running a raw XP install on Telstras cable without any protection. I have only done it twice (several years ago). Both times done a fresh XP install while connected, both times if was infected before I got the AV software loaded (which was the first thing after loading the drivers). Both times I had to format and reinstall. Learnt to install, put in drivers and AV software off line pretty quick after that lol. Iantech (16386)

I've done that - although with Windows default firewall.
Naked PC - instant malware, 23 in 1/2 hour actually, and that from not even browsing, just leaving it connected and wandering off.

But with AV, AS etc? No. Although that was with Counterspy - alas, which ceases to exist end of this year.
