1230025 2011-09-12 09:19:00 Metla, why take issue with some of your posts? I personally think your opinions are essentially well thought out, although at times perhaps a little abrasive. You say things that others shy away from.

Keep it up.

That last comment is not childish but rather, childlike. "You are. I'm not. You are." etc. Keep to the essence of the fight.

God damn it, I want a fight.

Really I just wanted to blast Goodies Guy without it looking like a straight out attack.

Muhahahahaha

1230026 2011-09-12 09:24:00 Considering New Zealand is no longer really bi-cultural, but multi-cultural, I'd like to see your improvements on it.

Lets look at the likes of Beijing and their 2008 Olympic Games opening. Do all Asians walk around wearing the kind of get-up they portrayed? Doubt it. Perhaps they could have shown the great "firewall" of china that blocks so much of their internet and filters everything? That's a modern-day representation of them, should they display that?

Get off your high-horse.

I'm all for portraying what the average "white guy" goes through, but a lot like the american culture, there's not a lot like that which would be portrayed in a show like that!

NZ is multi-cultural as you have pointed out, therefore a cross-representation of New Zealanders and show case New Zealand as a nation for what we have achieved would have been more beneficial to the country would it not?

I dont think your comparision of the Beijing Olympics is a good one. That opening portrayed the Chinese in China, if it was to be compared, then the RWC opening would have portrayed New Zealanders in New Zealand, whereas it didn't, it portrayed Maori in New Zealand.

Lastly, its not about "white guys", its about New Zealanders and having a New Zealand representation. You say that there is not alot of New Zealand European culture that can be portrayed, that I very much disagree with. Take a look at what has been achived in this country in the last 150 years that have put us on the world map, you probably wouldnt cover them all if the opening lasted 24 hours. Medical achivements, Exploration of South Pole, Mt Everest, splitting the atom, early explorers, gold minig, gum digging, forestry, coal mining, whaleing, sealing. Our native birds and wild life. Hamilton Jet, bungy, new zealand inventions, martin jet pack, the Britten motor bike, Burt Munro. and on and on. And all the things Metla pointed out in an earlier post.

This is about New Zealand, and there is so much more to New Zealand. Maori may be part of it, but they are not all of it.

1230027 2011-09-12 09:24:00 Build a bridge and get over it guys . . . . . . . . .

We are all entitled to our own opinion . . . . . . . . .

But just sometimes its not even worth the effort to argue . . . . . . . .

Take a deep breath and get up from the comp and walk away . . . .

Life is too short to argue all the time .

1230028 2011-09-12 10:09:00 But, if we don't argue here, a great cultural tradition is in danger of being lost.

(The green stuff on senior bread is also a valid culture.;))

We argue, therefore we are.

I spoke with a few workmates at the time from mainland china. They basically felt the same way you do about the NZ opening ceremony. It was *not* an accurate representation of who they are today.

Heck, you could argue it wasn't even really a decent representation of Maori culture. But, it was entertainment, and it was done quite well.

I can pretty much guarantee that if goodiesguy actually had to get up and turn off the TV or walk out of the room, without enjoying the production and the show for what it was, then there is something terribly, terribly wrong with him.

Yeah mate, have your views, but don't milk it like that. You're not doing yourself or the promotion of New Zealand as a non-racist country any favours.

Sorry Metla, I think you're going a bit soft with age, kinda agree with a lot of what you've said :p

And thanks to the Mods for allowing this thread to be posted. No matter what we think of goodiesguy's criticisms, it does represent the current underlying racial tension here, and what many in NZ think of (certain aspects of) Maori culture.

For me, I see the RWC Opening as a means to get tourists to NZ and in this respect I think the opening ceremony was as good as it could be. I used to live in Rotorua and our overseas visitors loved seeing Maori performances. BTW, I heard on Radio NZ that the last time we had the RWC, the opening ceremony consisted of marching girls :groan: and some athlete running a lap or two.

1230034 2011-09-12 22:28:00 Goodiesguy.

I had to walk out of the room. I could not stand the maori shoving their culture in our faces once again. It was all about the maori's once again. I don't think there was anything in that opening about us 90% whites. I'm not racist, but i am god damn sick of those maori's trying to shove their culture in our faces.

By comparison, I find you relatively well-balanced, just personally :)
