1255236 2012-01-20 20:30:00 User upgraded the AMD Catalyst drivers (to Catalyst Software Suite v11.12) on a Windows-7 64-bit machine with HD 5000 series graphics card. Upgrade appeared to go fine.
Now, soon after the boot process is finished - the user logs in OK, gets their regular desktop, background startup stuff appears to start, but just before the user can actually do] anything - the screen turns all-blue (not the Blue Screen Of Death colour, a bit lighter) with no letters or anything on it, then it reboots.

I tried booting in safe mode, but this PC doesn't appear to have 'restore points' set on, so I can't revert to the previous configuration.:crying
In safe mode it works fine except of course the AMD video drivers aren't loaded so I can't upgrade / downgrade them.

I really, really don't want to recommend 're-install Windows from the installation CD', but am running out of ideas

Help!

1255237 2012-01-20 20:41:00 You cant do a lot in safe mode. Since most services are also disabled. Thats why you cant uninstall or install most programs in safe mode. That may also be the reason why there are no restore points in safe mode. Speedy Gonzales (78)
1255238 2012-01-20 21:36:00 Two things you can try in this order --

1.Download on a working PC to a USB drive Driver Sweeper (www.softpedia.com) - links on the right where it says softpedia - Boot the offending PC in safe mode, install driver sweeper, it installs and runs fine in safe mode ( untick the install real player when it gives the option during setup) Once installed, run it, select AMD ( since they are infact ATI) it will list all the ATI drivers, make sure the graphic drivers are all selected, and remove them. reboot the PC when prompted, then you can put the working drivers back in.

OR

2. Download as above Revo-Uninstaller-Portable (www.softpedia.com) once again, in safe mode run it, select the ATI drivers - uninstall, select the bottom option (advanced) and let it rip out all the drivers, reg keys, folders - reboot when finished - should boot fine then install good graphic drivers.

3. -- Cant resist-- get a nVidia card - ATI 's software is not to stable, seen more problems with ATI than nVidia drivers. :p

1255239 2012-01-20 21:54:00 Boot into safe mode, msconfig, untick the entries under services and startup that relate to AMD/ATI/catalyst.

reboot.

Uninstall the drivers

Run a driver cleaner (Of the 3 or 4 I have tried only the one gave 100 percent results on badly behaving ATI drivers, though Im a long way from home so no idea what it is)

Re-install drivers, either the ones that worked of a freshly downloaded package, all depending on how brave you maybe.

I believe its the cayalyst control center that causes the initial issues in most cases, Loading corrupt conflicting profiles/settings that cause the blue screen, and when this happens the drivers/package don't uninstall cleanly.

So when you re-install the probelm reapears immediatly.

1255241 2012-01-20 21:59:00 Is there anything interesting in the system log?

I have seen PCs BSOD before without actually displaying a BSOD "properly" (can be black screen, corrupted screen etc) yet there is still a BSOD event written to the event log.

Disabling restart on system crash might help too.

The fact it happens after logging in seems to suggest it may be a compatibility issue, have you tried using MSCONFIG to disable everything and then starting normally?

If it starts OK then, start enabling things selectively and hopefully you can narrow down what causes it to crash.

Edit: Looks like Metla got in while I was writing this! Whoops

1255243 2012-01-20 22:17:00 Thank you, wainuitech, sir!
You are a gentleman and a scholar, the machine is now back on 11.3 which I know works

DriveSweeper has now been added to my list of essential software for when the brown stuff comes in contact with the rotating air distribution device

And if Charlie Demerjian is right about Kepler/GF104 (see <semiaccurate.com), then I might just switch camps again

Thanks again
