| 870 | 1998-11-25 07:33:00 | I loaded Word 97 recently and after doing so found that when I ran Scandisk (which had been working fine up till then) it would constantly restart itself over and over again. I dug down to the System Configuiration Utility in Windows 98 and had a look at the startup tab and discovered that Word 97 had placed two files in the startup called Microsoft Findfast (C:|PROGRA~|\MICROS~1\OFFICE\FINDFAST.EXE) and Office Startup (C:\PROGRA~1\MICROS~3\OFFICE\OSA.EXE). I turned these two programs off in System Configuiration Utility then restarted Windows and ran Scandisk again. This time Scandisk ran quickly and efficiently without restarting once. Now my Query.Findfast seems to be something that works for a networked computer and as I have just the one computer I assume that I can leave Findfast turned off in my startup without affecting my use of Word 97. However I have no idea what the other program does and I would like to know if leaving it off in my startup is going to affect my use of Word 97. It would also be nice to know why these Word 97 startup programs caused the problem in the first place. Is it because they are checking something on the computer all of the time or is it some sort of horrible software design fault? Thanks very much. John Grieve |
