873 1998-11-26 04:53:00 Dear Peter & other helpful folk,

I am trying to use the Direct Cable Connection programme in Win95 to connect my laptop and work desktop machine, via a parallel cable. I have done this successfully between the laptop (Win98) and my home PC (Win95), and transferred large files with no problems.

When I run DCC on my work machine it is unable to see the parallel port (LPT1) and I get the following message:
'Could not add the new port to this system. Rerun direct cable connection. If this problem persists, reboot your system and try again'. None of this helps, nor does changing the port settings in the BIOS (standard, bidirectional, EPP, EPP+ECP - I'm not sure precisely what type of port I have). I've also tried re-installing the DCC software, to no avail. It doesn't make any difference whether or not I have the cable plugged in to the port, the software simply cannot see it. I use this port all the time for printing, so I know it is functional, and it shows up in the device manager with no conflicts or any other problems.

I'd be very grateful for any advice!

many thanks,
Martin Kennedy
