I recently installed a 56k US Robotics modem which uses the V90 standard. Every time I connect to my ISP Windows 98 reports that I am connected at 115200 bps, which is obviously untrue. I thought that this was just a glitch in my own computer, but recently I installed a 56k modem (another brand) with the K56 standard in a friend's computer. While it was using the K56 standard it reported connection speeds of 42000 bps, which is most likely true. But as soon as I flashed the EPROM to the V90 standard it, too, reported that it was connecting at 115200 bps. I am using Windows 98 and he is using Windows 95 (OSR2.5), so the problem is not specific to the OS. Is this a bug in the V90 standard? Since the reported connection speed obviously bears no relationship to reality (even if you halve it) how am I to know my actual connection speed? |
