| 1048 | 1999-01-05 10:56:00 | RE: Problems with Direct X I purchased a computer in June of 1998. The operating system is Windows 95 the latest version before the Windows 98 release. The specifications of the machine is that it has an Intel SE 440 BX Motherboard, 233 Pentium II processor, 64 Mb RAM, and the Video card is Intel Express 4 Mb AGP Video card, ViewSonic Monitor. It has the latest drivers for the Video and sound card from Intel's site. It came with Direct X version 5. There was another release of Direct X shortly after that, Direct X 5.x, and when I installed that I got the message... Direct X Setup Initialisation Failed Direct X Setup Error -9 (internal error, your direct X source media is corrupt) That was from an Internet download at Microsoft's site. I then tried installing Direct x version 5.x that came on a CD from a game. Same error message. I installed Direct X version 5.0 again from the Intel installation disk that came with the Video card. Same error message. So all three sources of Direct X can not be corrupt unless it is a Microsoft fault. I wrote to Intel about that, and they had no idea what that meant, but in sounded like a Microsoft Problem to them. It did not really matter because games that required Direct X 5.x, still ran OK. So far so good, sort of ... I then download Direct X version 6 from the Microsoft site, both the core file dx6core and the file dx6eng. When I installed either of those files, I got the same message. Some of the Direct X 6 files must have been loaded because there is now that option turn direct X 6 on or off. I turned it on, and it said it had successfully been loaded into the registry. Games still ran OK. I got a new game (for the kids for Christmas) Motoracer 2, that will only run on Direct X version 6 or higher. I loaded the game, and then started in, and I got the message... This game requires Direct X 6 or later, you have version 5. Microsoft strikes again. The game came with Direct X version 6, and when I installed it from the CD, you guessed in, same error message. I tried to remove Direct X from the setup, in the hope of reinstalling it, but the remove option, but it did not work. It did list a Direct X Subsystems, and all of them were certified except some thing called Primary Display Dr... 4.10.35.2043 I looked an Microsoft's Web sight for that error message, but nothing was listed. So what does the error message mean, and can anything be done about it. Can you get back to me... Mike Lomb 100352.3612@compuserve.com |
