| 1275 | 1999-02-24 08:35:00 | Queries re a new IBM ThinkPad600, PentiumII 300MHz, 64RAM, 5.1GB hard disk 1) When I boot up my ThinkPad I sometimes get this screen: Microsoft Windows98 then the message Plug N Play BIOS Detected Hibernation file already present then this screen (again) Microsoft Windows98 then the message again Plug N Play BIOS Detected Hibernation file already present Why does it tell me this twice? 2) I loaded Microsoft Office97 on the machine, basically to run a large (38,840KB) Access file. When I open this application, I see that my system resources are reduced to 84% or 80%. Occasionally, after working on this file awhile, I eventually get an 'out of memory' message. Checking the computer's System Properties/Performance, shows that System Resources are down to about 20%. Subsequently, the desktop icons turn white and the Start button becomes non-functional (one clicks on it and the pop-up menu does not appear). Yesterday I discovered the location of the check System Folder command. Running this check told me that I had a corrupted file, namely C:\Windows\System\user.exe. Is this the cause of all these problems? If so, how do I replace this file? I inserted the ThinkPad customization CD-ROM and could not find user.exe. I cannot believe I need more than 64RAM to run a large Access file. Comments welcomed. I have already once used the CD-ROM recovery disk. Perhaps I should try to reinstall Windows98 from the customization CD-ROM, though I am not quite clear on this procedure. Sincerely Steve Behrendt |
