| 1256041 | 2012-01-26 23:21:00 | Hi guys, got a client locally who works through a VPN up to New Lynn, currently running from an XP Pro machine which is acting as a file server and that's about it. The guys in New Lynn have taken delivery of a new SBS 2008 machine, and want to get it setup, they also want to run an accounting package through terminal services for them in the office, and have access to this remotely too. The software fully supports this. Is there anyone on the forum who would be interested in tackling such a setup, or does anyone know of a good, reliable company preferably in the New Lynn area who I can put my client in contact with? Many thanks. :) |

And yeah don't think you can/would want to run TS on an SBS box, which possibly means you all so need the premium licence add on. It's pretty important to not let some school kid with half clue set this kind of thing up and supply ongoing support - but i'm sure you were well aware of that. |

Sorry that should read "You CAN'T do this on an SBS box" :D And Alex is right, how did they get the new server without installation included? Did they buy it cheap on TradeMe or something. We normally allow two 8 hour days to install an SBS box, get it configured correctly and get all the workstations setup to the SBS box. Then make sure emails are working correctly being delivered by SMTP rather than the server using POP. Also some AV would be installed on the server and workstations and we normally use NOD32 for this. |

| 1256045 | 2012-01-27 02:30:00 | 16 hours would be right if the installer had the chance to scope the thing out in the first place and spec the right stuff, which doesn't sound like it will be the case here :P | Alex B (15479) | ||
| 1256046 | 2012-01-27 02:39:00 | Thanks guys. I have no idea how or where they got the server from, all I know is they have one. I'll ask where they got it from, hopefully somewhere that can actually set it up for them... I would think they would need around 6 terminal services licenses. I didn't know that you couldn't do terminal server from sbs 2008 though. Never had the need to set it up yet...I know you need to buy x number of licenses for terminal server.... what do you run it from then? |

Hmmm. I don't suppose they got it cheapish, then thought they'd just have someone pop round for a hour or two and set it all up cheap. No worries.... |

MS Licencing, I don't know it well but I think you would need TS CAL's as well as the standard user CALS that (Think SBS comes with 5 CALs) You run it from a stand alone server usually. |

| 1256049 | 2012-01-27 03:49:00 | They will need to buy Windows Server 2008 and a seperate server to run as a Terminal Server. From memory you can't just add the Premium part to SBS2008, it was a seperate item. EG: you either bought SBS2008 Standard or SBS2008 Premium. With SBS2011 you can buy the Standard version and then add Premium later if you want. THe premium part gives you another Windows Server 2008 license to run on a seperate server to use as a terminal server or database server etc. Then they will need TS CALs for each user that will connect to it. |
