1255821 2012-01-25 09:11:00 Wife turns on older Toshiba laptop running Win XP Pro - no home network showing when it was earlier in the afternoon (but it is on all the other devices we have), but all the neighbors networks are showing.

Reboot Laptop
Remove Home from preferred networks
Uninstall and reinstall device
Reboot modem
Rescan for devices from modem
Reset Modem
Restore laptop to earlier time (yesterday)
(some of these several times)

nothing nothing nothing except everyone elses network. What is left to try?

1255822 2012-01-25 10:16:00 update - if I remove the requirement for a password to connect in the router settings then I can see the network and connect, but if I set it to require a password (the only sensible option) then it disappears again! Erger (10062)
1255823 2012-01-25 11:35:00 Try changing the security on the wifi in the modem setting - you should have WEP and WPA and hopefully WPA2.

Wpa2 is the best security and WEP the worst.

Hi yes tried that. It appears to revolve around the need for a password which is strange, WEP or WPA does not seem to be the issue.

Could it be a registry issue around the need for a password, tho if it was working earlier in the day and rolling back to the previous day did not resolve it then not sure if that is the problem?

1255825 2012-01-25 19:18:00 Yep, sure sounds like a security incompatibility. Try WEP as being the earliest security mode. If this works, try this patch for adding WPA to XP and retry router with WPA. linw (53)
1255826 2012-01-25 19:32:00 I tried WEP last night, with a requirement for a password and it could not see it, without the password requirement it could see it. It has happily been connected to the network set to WPA2 for weeks if not months and was so earlier in the day. I have a Lenovo running the same version of XP that connects, the machine is old in terms of about 4 years but not ancient. Erger (10062)

1255829 2012-01-25 20:04:00 Hi Erger,
I had same prob a while back and changed the channel in my wireless router from 11 to 9. WPA2 secured with passphrase. That worked for me.

thanks m'lady I have just read something similar and will have a try at that as well. Will it affect the other machines connecting to it or will they not even notice the difference? (note I wondered if completely changing the SSID name might be worth a try)
