| 1231568 | 2011-09-16 09:09:00 | One 6.0 or greater quake every 24-36 hours somewhere around the 'ring of fire' (our back yard). No wonder the reinsurers for Chch are being awkward. Sure, it may be a fluke cluster, but 6.0 is up in the range that can genuinely cause some significant damage. We've reportedly been in a time of unusually few quakes, so we may actually be returning to the normal level of quake activity. May be yet another reason not to build on the coast or by a riverbed. I wonder how well a steel framed building handles quakes. Timber has the benefit of some give, which disperses the energy, then returning roughly to the original shape and strength. If a steel frame busts its joints or bends then the problem may rapidly get more and more dramatic, as it's structural integrity does not return. |
