Any Dunedinites or visitors to Dunedin seen this thing yet and whats it all about? Sounds like a waste of money to me.

And why are decisions on the funding of projects confidential? Something to hide maybe? Surely the ratepayers would like to know where their money is being spent.

$50,000 to rent this monolith. Hardly good value for money, but that's so typical of those who are spending other peoples money.

One councillor has already resigned from the "Arts" committee over this and dear I say it, the people of Dunedin are not that happy about it. Especially when one particular Councillor who fully supported the idea is again getting mention in the local paper ... I'll let you guys decide.

Lee Vandervis is a bit of a media hungry eccentric to put it politely, but for once I agree with him. What a waste of money.

This is Dunedin not Auckland.

1231311 2011-09-16 04:41:00 Artists do some amazing things.

They also do some absolute shite, pass it off as art, and charge the earth for it. If other artists realise it they just keep it to themselves hoping to get in on the act one day, and critics can't tell the difference between spilled paint and artwork.

This is just a big black cylinder, if it looks like a penis to you maybe it's how you look at it :P
Anyway I don't find it to be particularly offensive, or artistic for that matter. The only noteworthy thing to me is the ridiculous amount of money spent on this stuff.

I like that councils try to be modern and do artistic things for their cities, but I have to laugh at the results. In Hamilton we have a bunch of painted red pipes that fills the V8 tracks pit lane outside of race season. Apparently thats art also ( I guess it could represent tailights or something but it's just a few bent red pipes ).

On the other hand I quite like our various statues including riff raff.
