1231117 2011-09-15 00:39:00 Can anyone recommend a good radar detector?

:thanks in advance.I have had various radar detectors since the early 80s. I travel at the speed limit most of the time and slow, overly cautious drivers who slow down/brake for every bend in the road are very frustrating.
I rarely exceed the speed limit except when passing slow and or pedantically supercilious drivers like "Prefect"
I have no issue with drivers getting past me faster than the speed limit.
Beltonics and Valentine are by far the best but not cheap. You gets what you pay for
I drive about 60,000Ks per year and experience shows, that it is generally inattention, not minor speeding that causes accidents. In saying that, the faster you are travelling, the faster things can go wrong and the greater the damage.
A radar detector to me, is just another safety tool.
Good luck with your decision.

1231121 2011-09-15 02:58:00 A GPS is very good for speed camera locations if kept updated and the ability of warning you that you are speeding or entering a lower speed zone which I find invaluable for travelling in different areas

So all in all ,I find a detector of real advantage when you arrive at passing lanes, you will get a indication of a Police car patrolling up a head and think twice about passing and let the ones behind get nicked which have been a few over the years
Got a nice Garmin GPS (buy.garmin.com) last year, had trouble justifying it at first - thought it was more of a accessory/toy. Now, I find it so handy going places, I thought I knew the quick ways around town, but that taught me a few new routes. Its saved me quite a bit in fuel costs and time spent between jobs over the last year, it was a good buy and is a real every day tool on the job now.

As for the radar, the one I have has been good, bought it off ebay about 5 years ago from the US, only cost a couple of hundred. But it has started making some funny noises although still works but time to update. I really only use it on long trips.

I'm not interested in taking 2 days to drive to Invercargill at Morris Minor or Prefect speeds lol, and I havent reached 80, so wont be getting a daihatsu just yet morganmuffel

Having one in the car depicted in your Avatar would be of no use to man or beast. No fear or pistol whipping there :D :D :D

1231124 2011-09-15 04:52:00 A Radar Detector wouldn't have saved anyone this morning on the Lyttelton Tunnel Motorway..........unmarked car cruising up and down the motorway at clearly sign posted speeds waiting for everyone to first tail gate and if they didn't notice the rear dash lights, they certainly noticed when they screamed past him, often doing so on double yellow lines as well.

Weren't they planning on making radar detectors illegal at one stage ?
