| 1255812 | 2012-01-25 06:49:00 | I have a 32Gb HD with WinXP and programs on, nothing else. I also have 2 identical 80Gb Maxtor’s, 1 for all my data the other as a backup to all my data. I also have an Asus DVD-RW drive. When considering the Pri/Sec and Mstr/Slv setup what configuration would be best please? TIA. Phil |

| 1255813 | 2012-01-25 06:52:00 | I would put hdds on primary and cd's on sec/slave. I would also use IDE connectors / cables (that have the blue connector at the mobo end). Or if the mobo has SATA, use that instead. Its more tidier, and you wont have to worry about pri/sec/master or slave | Speedy Gonzales (78) | ||

| 1255815 | 2012-01-25 07:01:00 | Yup thats right. the windows hdd on primary/master/ other hdd on prim / slave. I guess if you have 3 hdd's one will have to be on Sec master or slave. Just make sure the windows hdd is the bootdisk in the BIOS after you change them | Speedy Gonzales (78) | ||

| 1255820 | 2012-01-25 18:15:00 | Agree with Speedy, like to point out though if you burn a lot of DVDs or CDs it will work best if the source and destination are not on the same cable. For example burning from primary master or slave to secondary slave will work better than burning from secondary master to secondary slave. It will work safely either way however, partly because modern drives don't have buffer underun problems like the old days and partly because there is usually plenty of speed to spare. Tech magazines etc always used to recommend against sharing a cable between optical drives and hard drives if possible as it can slow down the hard drive performance, but I've done it with no obvious problems. Actually in the days of my first CD writer I always put a normal optical drive as primary slave and the writer as secondary slave so I could copy disk - disk directly without making coasters, anything else and buffer underun killed the operation. I never noticed any difference in hard drive performance from doing this despite it being contrary to all conventional advice. |
