| 1803 | 1999-05-09 01:01:00 | My retailer has the following AGP cards: Cardex Trio 64 4 MB $80 Cardex Intel 740 8 MB $120 Cardex Riva ZX 8 MB $120 Helios Banshee 16 MB $295 Creative Banshee 16 MB OEM $345 Creative RIVA TNT 16 MB OEM $245 Diamond Viper 550 RIVA TNT 8 MB $195 Diamond Viper 550 RIVA TNT 16 MB 295 ATI Rage Fury 32 MB $495 Matrox Millenium G200 8MB OEM $195 Matrox Marvel G200 8 MB $595 I plan to upgrade my computer to a Pentium Celeron 400/433 with 64 MB Ram with one of the above AGP cards. I am a student (price wise) and don't need a real fancy card. I don't use it for graphics, not planning for any games (ie. voodoo and 3dfx). I mainly use it for MS Office 97 on win95 (as win98 does crap for speed) and Netscape for surfing under four hours a month without email (I check email at varsity through the back door). I also use it for VCD (video cd's - movies) and plan for DVD in 12-24 months running on this same computer. My upmost limit would be $200. What do u recommend and why??? Is the top three cardex ok (if so which one) or is it better weighting everyting into consideration I should go for the Matrox Millinium G200??? Having this computer is it needed to purchase a DVD card for my DVD-ROM or is it sufficient to use the onboard bus?? I have seen a friend's IBM Thinkpad with DVD without card and it runs like a gem (PII-300). Also on my other computer I have a AMD-200 with 64 MB Ram with a Diamond stealth 3D-2000 4EDO Ram PCI vcard. I plan to upgrade a DVD-ROM into it - is it needed to purchase a DVD Card or is it ok to use the onboard bus?? |
