1257299 2012-02-04 04:18:00 Hi all, I want to change from Telecom to Slingshot. Telecom gave me a Thompson wireless modem with the contract I am on. I am pretty sure I am out of contract now. If I am and change ISP's, do I have to give the modem back to Telecom? Apologies if this is a dumb question.

Comments appreciated as always :):D

1257300 2012-02-04 06:50:00 I can't say for sure with telecom, but when I changed isp from telstraclear, out of contract, they didn't ask for their modem back. Still using it quite happily. Catweazle (2535)

do I have to give the modem back to Telecom?

1)Bad idea.

2)Once the contract has ended, you keep the modem.

1257302 2012-02-04 20:30:00 Yeah what PC-tek said, if you read the terms of the contract if you cancel before the 2 years is up you can be charged for the modem so they won't ask for it back but they could ask for you to pay for it.

Pretty sure it was - free router = 1 yr contract, free wireless router = 2 yr contract. Sadly it wasn't worth it as the Thompsons are not good routers, I gave mine away and bought a new one long before the 2yrs was up.

1257303 2012-02-04 22:16:00 + 1 for pctek's comments about changing to Slingshit. My daughter signed up for 30GB Naked on the 16th of January and got told it would be hooked on WITHIN 10 days ... she's still waiting and has been hung up on by customer services 3 times ... Going for a credit. SP8's (9836)
1257304 2012-02-05 01:36:00 Oh lordy this just seems bad news all the way lol. I am paying $160 for 100Gb with Telecom and Slingshot can do the same but for$111. I was thinking it was the cheaper option. If the Thompson Modem is not that good, what difference would I notice if I replaced it? and what should I replace it with? Thanks for the replies too, it helps to know other ppls thoughts :) ollieogg (6593)
1257305 2012-02-05 02:19:00 I will leave it up to others to advise on slingshot, I haven't used them myself. As for the Thomson modem, if it's working ok for you stick with it. They perform about as well as any others when they are working. The problem is they seem to have a high rate of failure and a lot of people have issues with them randomly losing the connection and not coming back without a restart or worse. On top of that the interface is horrible to find your way around when you need to change something. However if they are working and stable and you don't need to play with the settings then they are actually ok, only replace it if you start having issues.

On the recommendations our our resident router advisor Chilling Silence I grabbed a netcomm NB6Plus4Wn to replace mine which seems like a decent choice, however I'm still having to reset it fairly often (wondering if getting interlacing turned off is a factor).
But as for performance, connection speed is no better than the Thomson was.

The free Thomson wireless router is NOT that bad as far as I am concerned; in fact, it's as good as any of the available wireless router of the price range. Having said that, I have to say that its user interface is not that 'user-friendly' though. Other than that, it's a piece of excellent gadget. I would say that there won't be any noticeable differences if you were to replace it with any make or model other than different user interfaces. Furthermore, it's FREE.
