1256677 2012-01-30 23:49:00 An associate was contacted last night by "24 Seven Windows Support"
He innocently thought that they were authentic and gave them his credit card details to purchase Advance SystemCare 4.

He has stopped his credit card.
But his main concern is did they upload all of his personal files from his computer.
Is there any way to confirm or deny this?

1256678 2012-01-31 00:11:00 Advanced Systemcare 4 is a legit program, there is a free one and one you pay for. www.iobit.com
Never heard of 24 Seven Windows Support though, sounds like a scammer is on selling at a higher rate maybe?

any thoughts on the piracy of his data?
NZHawk (4093)
1256680 2012-01-31 00:37:00 Dont give any details to ANYONE. If they ring. And DON'T let them log into your computer. If they want to check it out. Sounds like those other scammers, who think something is wrong with your system, when there isn't Speedy Gonzales (78)
1256681 2012-01-31 00:49:00 roger that Speedy.
But unfortunately this fella did.

My question is: has his data been compromised?
NZHawk (4093)
1256682 2012-01-31 00:53:00 Depends if they did anything. And if they did, (what did they use)? Did they log into the computer or what? And did he see what whoever did? If its like the other scammers, they usually disable services.. So some things wont work / run. So if something goes wrong next time, the user wont know / or be notified Speedy Gonzales (78)
1256683 2012-01-31 00:54:00 We will not know for certain will we? Snorkbox (15764)
1256684 2012-01-31 01:18:00 They used LogMeIn
He did watch - I'll have him go over the process.

I agree with Snorkbox

Just how sensitive is this data ??
You might be able to look at timestamps to see when files were last accessed

To be sure , you'd need some forensics done on the PC.
- Turn it off & take it to a specialist (not a PC repair shop)
- expect to pay big $$$$$

But its unlikely that they would have bothered rummaging through your stuff looking for something interesting (allways a chance though)
Is also a SMALL possibility they left something behind in the PC , eg a keylogger, viruses, back door to give them access. Again, possible but unlikely

1256686 2012-01-31 01:23:00 Well if he saw them doing whatever, ask him if they disabled services / where did they go or do. If they did, he'll have to enable them again. The last time I fixed something up with teamviewer, whoever disabled a few services, and also disabled the event log. I just compared (what I had enabled at the time), with the person's PC I was fixing Speedy Gonzales (78)
