1232397 2011-09-20 07:03:00 Situation: Need a decent computer for advanced Video Editing and Design.
Budget: Around $3,000.
Needed: Lots of RAM (Preferably 12GB+), fast storage, and a fast CPU. GPU needs to support 3 monitors (HDMI, VGA, and/or DVI) As well as other video editing parts you think are essential.
Not needed: Monitor, speakers, keyboard, mouse, and any other accessories. Only the tower.

If you could help me with the build, please post below! :)
Please note: all parts must be compatible.

1232398 2011-09-20 07:09:00 Are you in NZ?? Some videocards even tho they may have all the connections, dont always allow you to use all 3 at the same time. Even if theyre onboard some mobos dont support all 3 at the same time. I dont know why they put all 3 on the mobo Speedy Gonzales (78)

Yeah - I live in New Zealand. If it doesn't allow you to run three monitors off the one card at the same time, two GPU's can be used?

1232400 2011-09-20 08:54:00 Motherboard: Gigabyte Z68XP-UD3-iSSD Has 20 GB of fast reliable SLC SSD cache. Has 'virtu'
CPU: i5-2500K (i7-2600k is better but this one would be good enough for me!)
RAM: 8GB DDR3 1600 MHz
HDD: WD green 2TB but anything will do if you get the iSSD MB. Don't need SSD unless for fast startup
Graphics: whatever Snorkbox recommends...
OS: W7pro64

1232401 2011-09-20 09:16:00 Why Win7Pro, not home premium? Greven (91)
1232402 2011-09-20 09:31:00 Depends if you want the features Pro has, that Prem doesnt have Speedy Gonzales (78)
1232403 2011-09-20 09:33:00 Why Win7Pro, not home premium?

Because Pro can be obtained free from university :D

Give a thought to the video editting software you'll be using.

Is it 64 bit?
If not, is there likely to be a 64 bit revision in the near future?
If not again, then the 12MB of RAM is no better than 4GB RAM.

Does it support multi-core processors?
No? Then revise your choice of CPU as well.

1232405 2011-09-20 09:42:00 And the only programs (I think), that are 64 bit, are Sony Vegas, Powerdirector, and Adobe Premiere Speedy Gonzales (78)

Good points;

Yes, the application software is 64-bit, and supports multiple core rendering.
I'll be using professional software such as After Effects, Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, Photoshop, and Cinema 4D. Along with some others.
