2209 1999-06-21 08:19:00 I run a Rockwell-clone K56Flex modem via a standard Win95/OSR2 TCP/IP
connection. I use IE4.01 and Outlook Express. My ISP is PlaNet.

I've been using this setup for most of the last 12 months without
problems, except for the last 2. About 7 out of 10 times when I try to log in to PlaNet, the handshake tone has a very different-to-normal tone. The beginning of the tone is broken with a number of short and varied frequency pulses/tones, rather than the fairly steady 'normal' handshake tone I'm used to.

When, after many frustrating attempts to connect, the correct handshake tone appears, and the connection proceeds normally without further problem.

With the 'new' handshake tone, the connection is often abruptly terminated immediately after verifying and logging in, or the connection goes through but any data transfer is very slow or non-existent. Sometimes the following message appears:

Error 650: The computer you are dialling into does not respond to a network request. Check your server type settings in the properties...etc.
Or
Error 629: you have been disconnected from the computer you have dialled into...etc

If I disconnect after a good connection and immediately reconnect, usually all is ok. If I wait for a longer period and then try again, this usually results in the faulty handshake tone.

Suspecting something might be amiss on my system, such as the Dial-Up
Adapter or TCP/IP, I deleted these and reinstalled all of them. However, the symptoms remained as above. I have also checked obvious things like physical plug/socket integrity and reinstallation of the modem card.

This afternoon, on the advice of one of PlaNet's techs, I upgraded my modem firmware to V.90, but the fault remains.

I've run out of ideas after being told by Planet that the problem was not at their end, and am ready to switch ISP's.

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Thanks!
